Summary: The Museum of Croatian Archeological Monuments in Split
keeps arichly decorated gothic belt found in a dry stonework burialplace at
the cemetery of Sv. Spas at the mouth of the Cetinariver. It consists 69
pieces of gold-plated silver appliques. Itsartistic arrangement enables us
to divide the belt by itscontents and material into two main parts. Its
front, functionalpart with carved outlines of flora and fauna consists of
severalsymbolical wholes. The second part of the belt is anarchitectural
whole with vertically divided profane motives. Itwas probably produced by a
French or Italian goldsmith's shopswhere it was imported from. We may
conclude that the use of ametal belt is an ancient tradition. It have been
preserved aspart of the Dinaric national costume.
