    Summary: In accordance with the chronology of the historic events, themusical life in Split could be divided into two parts - theprerevival period and the transistory decades. Each part wascharacterized by three components of the city's musical life :the general historic review of the socio-political, economic andcultural conditions, musical performances and localities ofmusic-making. It consisted of musical activities in culturalassociations, repertorie and musicians whose merit was thecontinuation of musical engagement in Split that depended greatlyon the situation in this tempestuous social an political turmoil.Music instruction educated singers and instrumentalists neededfor public performances, singing and playing in church or forcultural entertainments at varieus eccasions. All these eventswere published daily. Those pieces of information have remaineduntil today the completest source of date. This book, therefore,encloses also a supplement of information on musical life inSplit during those decades. The third part deals with the musicalcreativity of the few professionals in Split, kinds and forms oftheir music and its rise. The summary is emriched by the enclosedlist of the musicians. With a review ofthe repertorie andcompositions ofthe Split composers from 1860 to 1918. Notes withexplanations quote sources and literature with bibliography andregister of names.

    Summary: The Croatina composer Jakov Gotovac (Split, 11.10.1985-Zagreb,16.10.1982.) was connected with his native town of Split in twoways : directly and indirectly. The direct connection lasted from1895 till 1922, and the indirect one for the last six decades ofhis life until his death in 1982. The Split of Gotovac'schildhood and early youth influenced him profoundly anddecisively as a man, composer, and artist. The indirectconnection between Gotovac and Split, consisted ofhis privatevistits and official sojourns as author and conductor of his ownworks on the occasion oftheir first Split performances or jubileeperfor,amces, and ofhis music which was and actually is a livingpart of Split musical life.
