Summary: The cultures of the Neolithic, Eneolithic and the Late Bronze Age in Slavonia and Baranja are relatively poorly researched. Field survey, preparation for archaeological excavation, and the publication of previously discovered archaeological material have supplemented knowlidge in the recent period about the genesis and development of the Starčevo Culture(Neolithic), the Seče and Retz-Gajary Cultures (Eneolithic), and the Virovitica and Zagreb groups (the late Bronze Age) in the region of northern Croatia.

Research goals: The project "Research into Prehistoric Cultures in Slavonia and Baranja" is the continuation of investigation of the neolithic period (the Starčevo Culture), the eneolithic (the Seče and Retz-Gajary Culture) and the late Bronze Age (the Gređani,Virovitica, and Zagreb Groups). The earlier prehistoric periods in Slavonia and Baranja are poorly researched and hence investigation of them is of essential importance to archaeological science in Croatia. The most recent research into Starčevo settlements in the river basins of the Sava and Drava has led to the discovery of entirely new knowledge about development of the Starčevo Culture in the region of northern Croatia (at the sites of Pepelana, Bukovlje,Slavonski Brod, Zadubravlje). The tell site of Pepelana consists of eight occupation strata (neolithic and eneolithic) in addition to the Starčevo settlement, and it will thus enable a complete over view of cultural development in this section of Croatia. The late Bronze Age sites of Gređani and Špišić Bukovica are the two largest and to date only sites with cemeteries contemporaneous to the settlements. Their excavation would offer fundamental data about the genesis and development of late Bronze Age settlements,not to mention the relationship of settlements and cemeteries.The latter aspect is of particular interest and further increasesthe scientific importance of this project.
