    Summary: The Croatian emigration to America started after 1880. It was notpossible to establish the exact number of first immigrants inAmerica because they came from Austro-Hungary and they were oftenregistrated as Austrians or Hungarians. Approximatly 500.000Croats came to America before the World War One. The firstliterary appearances may be found in various religious documents,calendars and year-books. Newspapers and journals brought prose texts, anecdotes and poetry. A very rich bilingual emigrants'literary production has been developed.
