Summary: The literary creations of Istrian Croatia developed in
anatypical manner in the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuriesin
relation to the central direction of Croatian literature inthis period, as
it retained elements of the "Croatianrenaissance" type of literature until
ca. 1914. The authorindicates the social causes (political, economic,
cultural) ofthis atypical literary development in Istria (as well as
theKvarner Islands), and establishes that Croatian literary historyhas not
taken account of this aberration. Croatian Istrian"rebirth" authors are
considered to represent delayed retentionof the Illyrian movement and to be
a hindrance to Croatianliterature in its attempts to follow European
trends, hence theyhave been ignored and forgotten, remaining unassessed
andexcluded in surveys of Croatian literary history. The study ofthe
"rebirth" literature of the Istrian Croats was scarce in theperiod between
the wars, with several exceptions, and thissituation was not modified after
1945. Only during the past twodecades has this segment of Croatian
literature been researchedmore intensively, and this article higheights the
results of thisresearch as well as attempts to incorporate these results in
thehistory of the Croatian literary corpus as a whole.

Summary: The paper presents and evaluates the literary work of
JosipGržetić and portrays his curriculum vitae. Living and working inthe
19th century, at the time of the Croatien nationalrenaissance, in the
Austrian provinces Istria and Dalmatia,Gržetić in his poems, short stories
and the novel "Urotnici"(Conspirators) has realized all the literary
characteristics ofhis era. Pointing out to his national and patriotic
orientationand stylistic procedures of the school of romanticism, Gržetić
inhis prose word gradually makes known some characteristics ofrealism. Like
many other writers of the time in Dalmatia andIstria, Gržetić, too, has not
so far been observed in theliterary and historical sense. This paper
presents him as atypical and important literary man of the regions in which
he wasliving and working.

was a provinca of the Austrian part of the Habsburg Monarhchy. Since than
it was a part of Italian Kingdom (to the exclusion of the islan of Krk). A
small minority of the Italians and italianized Croats ruled over the
absolute majority of the population - the Croats. As a part of the Croatian
National Revival there developed a political moviment which brought the
apsolute Croatian majority to the almost equal position with the Italian
minority, by the year 1918. Since than and until 1941 Italy ruled over
Istria trying to denationalize-italianize ther Croat population by force.
During the World War II the Croats Liberated their homeland and united with
the Croatian mother country. There are various essential components in the
field of literature, culture etc., which form the integral part of those

argument that the majority of the inhabitants of Istria are Slavs (i.e. the
Croats and the Slovenes). For the firs time in the history of the Croatina
