Title: The Etimology of the Adriatics
- Authors:
- Vinja, Vojmir (52351)
Number of pages: 460
Language: hrvatski
Summary: "The Etymology of the Adriatics", book 1, A - H, comprises
460 pages. It is a supplement to Skok's etymological dictionary. It
includes primarily the results of language contacts, the influence which
the Romance languages and dialects had on the language of Croats who have
lived on the Eastern coast of the Adriatic - from Istria to Boka kotorska -
since the seventh century.
The supplement is conditioned by the concept of Skok's dictionary along
with the application of the most optimal system of processing and the most
adequated presentation of bibliographical data at the end of each entry
which does not contain any notes. The entries do not repeat Skok's material
so the author has enough opportunity and possibilities to introduce some
different views on certain etimologies. As the author gives a lot of
attention to semantics the descroptions are neccesarily more extended than
a concise etymological equation.

Summary: The author gives a chritical view of the toponomastic
method byPetar Skok. In analyzing the etimology of the toponyms:
Kornat,Škrovada, Sakatur, Koritnjak, Jadra and Piškera on theNorthdalmatian
islands, V. Skračić shows that Skok was notsufficiently acquainted with the
referents (objects in nature);on the other hand, in determining etymologies
he relied too muchon the forms without taking into account the content.
