Summary: The theoretical research of Italian literature comprises problems of defining literature and its reception, the main types of critical approaches to literature, the relation between Italian literature and the ancient world,the problem of the geography of Italian literature, the study of poetics and literary genres.

Research goals: The aim of the proposed resarch is to established a theoreticalfoundation (it would be too ambitious at present to call it a"scool") of our own in the domain of Italian studies. Aprivileged place is accorded to selective knowledge based onleaps or diagonal connections between kindred phenomena. Threethemes will be dealt with under the working titles of "TheRelationship between Italian Literature and Philosophy", "TheFeatures of Italian Poetics from Castelvetro to Post-Modernism"and "Narrative technics in the Modern Italian Novel:between metanarrative and neofigurative narrative", and several articles will be published in Croatian magazines. Theproject also includes theoretical papers in Italian dealing withmodern literature.
