Summary: Numerous English travel books about Dalmatia in 19th
century are reflection of new political and economic situation in
south-eastern Europe. Therefore, many experts in various fields (economy,
history of art, politics) were visiting Dalmatia and their travel books,
often assuming the form of reports, were intended for their commissionares
or learned societes. In all of them Great Britain shows a great interest,
then in its imperialistic phase, in the possibility of penetraiting new
regions, at that time outside the explicit interests of other European
countries. Strongly present is the interest in political events and rising
feelings of national belonging, often looked upon with disapproval.
Research goals: The background of British interest in Dalmatia in
19th century and the role Great Britain could play in Dalmatian cultural,
political and economic development. The extent to which Great Britain
succeeded in penetrating into this field thanks to the role of the travel
books. Other information about the project.
