Summary: The structure and dynamics of phospholipids and lipoproteins as model systems for the biological structure complexity, and tissues as chosen biological systems, are studied by spectroscopic methods (ESR, NMR). The surface structure properties of phospholipids and lipoproteins are defined, i.e. the surface charge distribution, molecular packing and lipid-protein interactions. Microscopic distribution and metabolism of free radicals are studied in the liver tissue. Organic paramagnetic centers induced by gamma-irradiation of aluminates and aluminosilicates, and the copper II complexes with aminoacides are studied by ESR, UV/VIS and IR spectroscopies.

Keywords: electron spin resonance (ESR), spectroscopic probes, phospholipids, lipoproteins (HDL,LDL, VLDL) tissues, aluminosilicates, aminoacids, copper(II) complexes

Research goals: 1) In lipoproteins: to define the structure and dynamic properties of lipoproteins from human plasma: a) surface charge distribution, b) nature of lipid-protein interaction, 2) In the liver tissue: to define the metabolism of nitroxides as the function of diffferent parameters (concentration of oxygenand iron ions), 3) To correlate the tissue growth and regeneration of the normal tissue with the content and structure of lipoproteins, 4) To show that aminoacids form stabile and long lived organic paramagnetic centers in the gamma-irradiated aluminates and aluminosilicates. 5) To define the nature of Cu(II) coordination sphere in the complexes with aminoacids as the model systems for the transport of copper and its binding properties to proteins.
