Summary: On the basis of research of the ion and x-ray beam
interaction with material, different nuclear analytical methods are under
development. Characteristics of different nuclear and atomic processes
are studied by measurements of cross sections for nuclear reactions,
elastic scattering, x-ray emission etc., using proton and heavier ion
beams. Using obtained results, methods are developed for measurements
(microanalysis) of concentration distribution of elements and isotopes in
studied specimens. Material characteristics are studied as the function
of microelement concentrations. Developed mathematical methods are used
for data interpretation. Using focused beam of low intensity, materials
characteristics are studied using single ion techniques STIM (scanning
transmission ion microscopy) and IBIC (ion beam induced charge).
Research goals: The main fields of research of ion beam
interactions with material for development and applications of nuclear
analytical techniques are: 1. Studies of x-ray production process by ion
and x-ray beams. Determination of cross sections for production of K, L
and M shell x-rays, using proton and C12 beams. Expected result is
development of PIXE spectroscopy especially for the x-ray energy region
below 2 keV. 2. Studies of the elastic scattering of protons and heavier
ions by measuring the scattering cross sections and ion stopping power.
Expected result is development of RBS (Rutherford Backscattering) and PES
(Proton Elastic Scattering) spectroscopies. Potential method sensitivity
and depth resolution are used for the applications in material science
(e.g. thinmetal films). 3. Studies of nuclear reaction characteristics by
the measurements of excitation functions important for the development of
methods for isotope depth profiling and quantitative analysis using (p,š)
reactions. 4. Development of systems for ion beam focusing (microprobe),
computer control of microbeam positioning and scanning, multiparameter
data acquisition system and software for experiment simulations and data
interpretation. 5. Using single ion techniques different characteristic of
semiconductor materials are studied using IBIC technique. Distribution of
density in materials are studied using STIM technique. 6. Development and
applications of X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) system as an analytical method.
By studying of all steps in the process of x-ray excitation and detection,
a method of standardless analysis using fundamental parameter approach is
under development. All developed methods are applied to materials
research, biomedical and environmental problems.
