Summary: The transport critical current density of bulk high Tcsuperconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O was enhanced by combining rapidquenching and directional annealing. Pellets of Y-Ba-Cu-Oproduced by conventional ceramic synthesis were rapidly quenchedin a twin roller (11.5 m/s). Compacted rods of the rapidlyquenched material were partially melted and directionallyannealed by slowly (2.5 mm/h) moving the sample through atemperature gradient of 45 C/cm from 1020 C to 900 C. Theresulting material is predominantly YBa2Cu3 O7(1:2:3) with a 20 %volume fraction of Y2BaCuO5 (2:1:1) and showed strongcrystallographic texture. Transport critical current densitieshave been measured from 1.6 10000 A/cm2 to 4.3 10000 A/cm2 in amagnetic field of 1.06 T at 77 K.

Summary: A Y2O3-BaCO3-CuO powder mixture with a mass ratio adjusted tofullfil Y:Ba:Cu = 1:2:3 stoichiometry was treated by means of thehigh-energy ball-mill equipment. It is slightly surprising thateven after an enormously prolonged milling (up to 202 hours) andwith a 10 g centrifugal acceleration of the milling balls the CuOcomponent preserves its crystalinity, whereas yttria and bariumcarbonate undergo almost complete amorphization already after 60 to 100 hours of milling. The papaer gives some hints about apossible explanation of the observed selective glassy transition.

Summary: It is shown that the so-called "relativistic" electric fields(T.Ivezic, Phys. Lett.A, 144(1990)427) from stationary currentcarrying conductors are responsible for the existence oflongitudinal forces that subject the conductor to tension. Theexploding wire phenomenon (P.Graneau, IEEE Trans. Magn. MAG-2O, (1984)444) is explained in terms of these longitudinal electricforces. Other unexplained electromagnetic experiments are alsodiscussed.

Summary: A successful attempt has been made to use recently developedequipment, which can produce a rotating electric arc, in thepreparation of coatings made from refractory carbide powders oncertain types of steel. Although some weak points were observedin the applied procedure of coating steel rods, it is stillworthwhile to continue investigations in order to improve ourcoating technique and thus to obtain coating materials withimproved properties in comparison with uncoated materials. Inparticular, it should be noted that this simple method of coatingis applicable even to items of very large dimensions.

Summary: The processes occuring during the laser oxidation of metals foruses such as oxidative writing are initially discussed. This isfollowed by a study of the oxidation of sputtered Ta-films.Oxidation in the non-stationary thermal fields (such aslaser-driven oxidation) generates particles which grow by thelocal isolated kinetics as the self-organized structures. Theself-organized structure at the heating rate beta (beta 10K/min), develops into a hemispherical multi-layered structureconsisting of spiralled discs whose radius is shrinking in thez-direction. The particle structure was derived from the latticecharacteristics of the successive layers, and from their spiralphase angles. Hemispherical particles with a three-dimensionalspiral embedded are the direct consequence of two-dimensionalhexagonal lattice commensurability and of the spiral phasematching. Hemispherical particles with irregurarly rippledsurfaces are the direct consequence of two-dimensional latticeincommensurability and of the spiral phase mismatching. Themorphology and the structure of the oxide particles, as well asthe properties of the oxide film (formed by the fusion of theneighbouring particles, and the fusion with the surroundingoxide) seem to depend on the heating rate.

Summary: The kinetics of crystal growth of the lead fluoride phases wasstudied at 25 C using the so-called constant composition method(pF-stat method). A linear growth law was obeyed for alpha-PbF2growth from equivalent lead nitrate and potassium fluoridesolutions with low supersaturation and pH between 5.2 and 5.6 inpure water and in 0.1 mol/dm3 KNO3 solution. The rate is about 5times greater at high ionic strength. It decreases linearly withchanging pH of the supersaturated solution both to higher and tolower values than mentioned (addition of KOH and HNO3,respectively), i.e. reaching the pH-s at which two other leadfluoride phases grow: (a) with large excess of Pb(NO3)2 over KFand KOH to pH=5.2 phase(s) of so far unresolved structure, whichundergoes the recrystallization in water to pure alpha-PbF2, andafter annealing to 450 C decomposes into beta-PbF2, and anunidentified phase (probably alpha-KnPb(n-1)F(2-n) phase with nvaried); (b) with large excess of KF over Pb(NO3)2 and HNO3 topH=4.3, the beta-PbF2 phase was identified. The characterizationof the grown phases was done on the basis of polarizingmicroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra and X-raypowder diffraction analysis.

Summary: Rayleigh-Taylor (R-T) instability frozen in the breakdown patternof a W-surface, after treatment by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, atn= 5 kHz, v= 5 mm/s, Q 1.12 GW/cm2, was studied. The R-Tinstability was found to appear in a form of chaoticallydistributed bubble-antibubble pairs in the hydrodynamic responsezone, with the low density fluid layer over the high density one.Bubble-antibubble pairs are top-rounded with circularcross-section, showing the scale-induced bifurcation on the smalland the large bubbles, i.e. those dominated by 2D effects, andthose dominated by 3D ones.

Summary: Very high temperatures are needed to prepare W-B compounds. However, the results obtained in this study demostrate a possibility of inducing the formation of W2B, WB or WB4 tungsten borides, in air and at room temperature, using the high-energy ball-mill treatment on appropriate compositions of the W-B elemental powder mixtures. The present results throw a new light on the synthesis of tungsten borides, and on the accuracy of the equilibrium W-B phase diagram.

Summary: Solid titanium target was irradiated with a N2 laser beam of a maximal energy density of 1.1 J/cm2 per pulse and of a duration of 6 ns. The plasma, formed near the Ti surface, was analyzed by emission spectroscopy, and the irradiated Ti surface was studied by a metallographic microscope. The results of both investigations reveal the influence of resonant absorption of the laser irradiation by the generated plasma. The plasma is dense and strongly ionized, with anelectron density of 1.5 (exp 18) 1/cm3 and electron temperature of 2.7 eV. The surface heating was found to be several times more efficient than in the cases when resonant absorption is absent. Most of the observed surface patterns appear to be caused by nonuniform surface heating and a very rapid cooling. The other features are interpreted as a possible consequence of plasma-hot surface interactions.

Summary: Pure copper, pure tungsten and Cu50W50 and Cu66W34 alloy films, afew micrometers thick, have been deposited onto a cooled glasssubstrate by dc magnetron cosputtering technique. Alloy filmsstructure ranged from completely amorphous to predominantlycrystalline W(Cu) solid solution, as determined by XRD method. Agrains size in pure metal films has been estimated to be 35-50 Afor tungsten and approximately 120 A for cooper. Filmmicrohardness was investigated as function of alloy compositionand substrate polarization during deposition. The microhardnessexhibits a maximum in phase diagram, similar to the case ofcompletely miscible binary alloys. It was found that the enhancedion bombardment due to negative substrate polarization increasesthe film microhardness. Annealing of the amorphous CuW films invacuum up to 250 C temperature increases the film microhardnessby 10-20 %, apparently due to the formation of W(Cu) crystallinephase dispersed within a predominantly amorphous film matrix.

Summary: Light microscopic observation, microhardness measurement and theX-ray diffraction method were applied to reveal the structure andsome mechanical properties of copper coated aluminium platesprepared under various conditions by using the magnetronsputtering technique. During the coating, one side of the platewas irradiated by argon ions. The results obtained indicate veryhigh hardness values, probably caused by the layer formed in theregion between the plate and coating. The irradiation effect ofargon ions was evident at lower temperatures, in contrast to thecase of higher preparation temperature, where this effect did notappear or it was masked by the layer formed at the interface. Thecalculated values of residual thermal stresses are close tohardness values measured on pure Al plate and, thus, they aresmall in comparison with other hardness values. In spite of thiscracks going through coating, normal to the interface, wereobserved which points to the possible presence of thermalstresses in copper coatings.

Summary: Laser-induced superplastic behaviour was observed on tungstensurface in multimode, multipulse treatment by Q-switched Nd:YAGlaser. Surface treatment performed at repetition frequency n= 5kHz, beam size of 90 um, peak power of 5 kw, and the beamvelocity v =5 mm/s has generated fine-grain rollingsuperplasticity. The two grain-rolling mechanisms were found tobe operative, both driven by the surface shear waves. For thefirst mechanism the corresponding model was found to be that ofPaidar and Takeuchi, while for the second mechanism the modelproposed by Beere. The mechanisms are initiated by differentstress field configurations in certain zones of the laser trace. However, both of them give superplastic shear-rate (epsilonpoint) in the range (0.066 - 0.166) 1/s, and the nonlineardependence of stress: epsilon point approximately equal to sigmasquare.

Summary: A number of research initiatives concerning the study of deamalgamation phenomena in the quaternary metal Ag-Sn-Cu-Hg amalgam is surveyed. The powder metallurgy route and research goals are emphasized. The performance of a simple deamalgamation apparatus was tested. Preliminary data on deamalgamation of both the dentistry amalgam scrap and the model Ag70-Sn17-Cu13 alloy., prepared by vacuum melting, were obtained by metallography, Vickers hardness microindentation, X-ray diffractometry and DTA techniques. Finally, the above results are described and interpreted.
Keywords: deamalgamation process, silver-tin-base (Ag-Sn-Cu-Hg) amalgams, regeneration cycle, recycling, X-ray diffraction, metallography, microhardness, DTA measurements.

Summary: Influence of high-energy ball-mill processing on the structural and morphological changes in quasi-ternary powder mixtures from the ZrO2-Y2O3-MgO system was studied by applying X-ray diffraction and specific surface area (BET) measurements. Extended solid solubility of MgO and Y2O3 in cubic ZrO2, as well as a new Y2O3-WC phase are observed. WC component was introduced into the milled system by a contamination as a consequence of the wear effect.
Keywords: ZrO2-Y2O3-MgO system, high-energy ball-mill processing, X-ray diffraction, measurement of specific surface area of powders by BET method.

Summary: The corundum (alpha-Al2 O3) is one of the most important ceramic materials. Due to its mechanical, electrical, thermal, optical, and the other properties this material is widely used in various engineering fields. Moreover, because of its high hardness and low cost it can not be avoided as abrasive material alone, or incombination with the other kind of powders. It is evident that upto date alpha-Al2 O3 has been prepared using various available methods, and most of them include prolonged heating chosen of raw materials at the temperature which is at least higher than 1000 C. Thus, a great amount of energy is consuming during the corundum preparation. The recipe which we offer in our patent allow one to be able to prepare the microcrystalline alpha-Al2 O3 powder in the course of processing starting with various raw materials such as: gamma-Al2 O3, Al(OH)3, gamma-AlOOH, or other crystalline modification of oxides or hydroxides, and then just applying the treatment consisting of one or two steps. The former route involve only mechanochemical treatment at the room temperature, while the latter one include firstly thermal heating of the starting materials at temperature taken from the interval 100-500C, and then applying the mechanochemical treatment again at the room temperature. However, the processing time is much shorter for route (b) in comparison with route (a).

Summary: The offered procedure for regenerations of silver alloys and pure mercury from dental amalgam scraps consisted of two steps. The first included heat-treatment of scraps in a closed system (e.g. vacuum furnace) up to temperature chosen from an interval of (650-800)K. At this temperature occurs decomposition of amalgam scraps, and pure mercury vapor was liquefied and collected in a vessel placed outside the system. The rest material (silver alloy) was removed from system, and then mechanically grinded (filed) up to average powder particle size (50-70 um) suitable for new application.
Keywords: regeneration (recycling) of scraps, silver-base amalgams, thermomechanical treatment.

Summary: In short way it was described different modern methods forproduction of various materials in their powder states.Thenfollowed description of possible methods for consolidation ofvarious types of powder materials. Finally the above knowled- ge was exploited in experiments using the tungsten-boron powdersystem. The results of the performed experiments indicatethat it is possible to prepare at the room temperature differenttypes of tungsten borides by applying the high-energy ballmilling instead of heating the powder mixtures at high enoughtemperatures (above 1000 C).
Keywords: methods of production of powders, consolidation methods of powders, tungsten-boron system, high-temperature synthesis of borides, milling synthesis of borides, high-energy ball milling, X-ray diffraction.
