Summary: During the five-years period from Jan.1, 1991 to Dec.31, 1995 (i.e. the passed 22 researcher-years time) we have been active in almost all subjects of research in accordance to our Proposal of the project. Moreover, we perfomed some additional work in connection to the mentioned ones because the results obtained were promising and worthwhile. Thus, during the above mentioned period 32 scientific papers have been prepared: 19 of them have been published in different journals, 9 of them appeared in different conference Proceedings, 4 of them have been submitted recently for publication in journals, and 2 are stil in preparation forms. Also, we attended to 14 various scientific meetings with contributions dealing with a similar subjects as those described in published papers. We would like to note here that we applied for 2 patents at the Bureau of Patents of the Republic of Croatia, and within the framework of this project 2 B.Sc. theses were defended at the Faculty of Science. The topics of our research (and efforts we made) were consisted of the theoretical studies and experimental work (laboratory realization of experimental conditions) which could lead to realization of the new materials having such properties to be suitable for applications in various high-tech engineering fields, as well as to be able to exploit these materials also for production of various items in our factories such as: TEŽ, INKER, TEP, SINTAL, etc. In this sense we are continuing to be active to enforce our future collaboration with them expecting to make in future the joint research projects. At present time this has been done within the lecture course "Materials Science", which has been given at the Faculty of Science by the principal investigator of this Project. The prevailing parts of research performed were based on the study of changes of: structural, mechanical and other properties of the chosen materials (e.g. powders of purealuminium oxides and hydroxides, and some zeolites; as well as some powder mixtures such as B-W, ZrO2-Y2O3-MgO, etc.) by applying the high-energy ball-mill processing. Particular attention we have paid to the research in which we revealed the microstructural properties of some high Tc superconducting ceramics and hard metals. Also, we have widen our knowledge and we have got more experience in preparation of coatings in forms of thin or thick metal or ceramic films via magnetron sputtering and laser processing techniques available in Zagreb. In future we want to extend our research group (including at least 2 new researchers) to be able to investigate more broad subjects. Namely, beside phenomena such as superconductivity, superplasticyty, etc. we would like to cover also investigationsrelated to the "shape memory" effect, superionic conductivityand the other interesting phenomena. Namely, it is truth thatthese and similar phenomena have been exploited very often these days in new developing techniques and advanced technologies.

Keywords: processing of materials for advanced technologies, powders, manufacturing (preparation) of powders, compaction of powders, consolidation of powders, sintering of powders, structural changes, phase transformations (transitions), microstructural properties, mechanical properties, superplasticity, superconductivity, thermal properties, mechanochemical treatment, thermal treatment, quenching, annealing, high-energy ball-mill processing, manufacturing of powders via precipitation, rotating electric arc, amorphization, crystallization, precipitation, modification of surface by laser treatment, coatings prepared by magnetron sputtering.

Research goals: Recent development (and various topics) in materials science research, and the technologies based on them, strongly confirm our predictions relating to the possibilities of industrial production and manufacturing of various items starting by powder materials (pure or mixtures). Simultaneously, they confirm the second of our predictions relating to prevalence (prestige) of the powder technologies in comparison to the other conventional technologies: with respect to the quality and the price of the final product. In this respect our optimistic expectations relating to this research project are thoroughly confirmed. Namely, we have been successful in realization (with relatively cheap equipments) of the experimental conditions necessary for the preparation of new materials having optimal properties for various advanced engineering applications. Since the elapsed project has been scheduled for 5-years period, we expect that in future the Ministry of Science and Technology of the Republic of Croatia will support our planed future project allowing continuation on the same or similar research project. In this case the final results of our reseach will be even more interesting and important for the advanced engineering applications of prepared materials.
