Summary: Research in theoretical solid state physics. Surface
physics, in particular the interaction of atoms and molecules with
surfaces, including scattering, chemisorption, energy and charge transfer.
Electromagnetic properties, optical properties and spectroscopy of thin
films and multilayer structures. The influence of impurities on
photosensitive properties of semiconductor films. Electrical properties of
solid electrolytes. Study of low-dimensional and strongly correlated
systems, such as magnetic impurities in metals, high-temperature
superconductors, quantum Hall effect. Electronic structure and
spectroscopy of atoms, with application to solids.
Keywords: theoretical solid state physics, surface physics, chemisorption, atom scattering from surfaces, thin films, surface polaritons, optical processes and spectroscopy, strongly correlated electron systems, Kondo effect, quantum Hall effect, high-temperature superconductors, electronic structure of atoms, photoemission
Research goals: The aims of the project is the research in the
theoretical solid state physics, in particular in some selected fields. In
surface physics, the properties of clean surfaces and the elementary
processes in the scattering and chemisorption of atoms and molecules on
surfaces are studied. These include charge and energy transfer between
atoms and surfaces, and vibrations of adsorbates. The research in this
field is important for the understanding of physical and chemical
reactions on surfaces. Another important topic are the strongly
correlated systems, with application to magnetic (Kondo) impurities in
metals, high-temperature superconductors and some other phenomena. The
theory of electromagnetic properties of thin films, cavities and
structures is applied to various processes of scattering and absorption of
light, nonlinear effects, spontaneous emission, etc. The influence of
impurities on photosensitive properties of semiconductor films has been
investigated.
