Summary: The physics of stellar atmospheres deals with qualitative
and quantitative analysis of the continuous and line spectra of Sun and
stars which lead to conclusions about physical structure of the stellar
atmospheres. Classical and contemporary methods of derivation of the
relevant physical parameters as well as the future perspectives of this
research have been explained.

Summary: The transition of symbiotic stars from the activity into
the quiescent phase has been deficiently studied in spite of its importance
for the determination of their relationship to the recurrent novae and on
the other side to the normal stars of the same spectral type. The behaviour
of the symbiotic star CH Cygni in the two year period after outburst has
been investigated.

Held: from 12/06/93 to 12/06/93
Summary: Without spectra taken with extraordinarily high resolution
the determination of the physical parameters of the late type giants by the
curve of growth method represents a serious problem. A refined fitting
procedure makes it possible to determine the excitation temperature with a
tolerable error. This leads to the evaluation of the microturbulent
velocity and abundance of elements in the photosphere.

Summary: In order to investigate the variability and irregular
outbursts of symbiotic stars optical spectra of CH Cygni have been
investigated. By monitoring the time behaviour of some physical parameters
the period of photometric quiescence of the star the signs and cause of a
new eruption have been examined. The postulated theoretical model and the
declared orbital parameters have been verified.

Summary: The behaviour of the cool component of the symbiotic star
CH Cygni over the two year period after its longest 1977-1986 outburst has
been investigated in the optical spectral region. The results show that CH
Cygni has been very close to the condition of optical quiescency and that
the comparison with normal stars could predict its future behaviour. The
relevant physical parameters of M type stars 30 Her and Beta And have been
taken for reference. The curve of growth method with refined fitting
procedure has been used.

Summary: The optical spectrum of the symbiotic star CH Cygni has
been investigated during the period 1987-1989. The measurements of the
radial velocities of the unblended spectral lines have shown that the
envelope is still expanding, that the absorption lines are formed in the
photosphere of the M6III star and that the emission lines show radial
velocities roughly opposite in phase with respect to the photospheric ones.
They can be associated with the companion. The complete disappearance of
the blue continuum has been proved.

Title: Spectroscopy of binary stars - systems Zeta Aur
- Authors:
- Jurdana, Rajka (170374)
Degree level: M.A.
Summary: The luminosity curve of binary stars is an indicator of
their eclipses. It leads to conclusions about the geometry of the system
and the dimensions of the components. Zeta Aurigae are binaries composed of
a late type supergiant and a smaller hot companion. The atmosphere of the
cold star has been investigated by spectroscopic monitoring of the
eclipses.

Summary: Epsilon Aurigae is an eclipting binary of a Zeta Aur type.
According to the present model it is composed of two hot stars of spectral
type O, the more massive one being surrounded by a dust and gas shell,
while around the less massive component an accretion disc has been formed.

Summary: According to the luminosity curve which is a consequence of
the degree of the components' conjunction there are several subtypes of
eclipsing binaries, w Ursae Majoris, type beta Lyrae and Algol type. The
atmosphere of the cold component of epsilon Aur type has been
spectroscopically investigated.

Title: Symbiotic stars
- Authors:
- Jurdana, Rajka (170374)
Degree level: M.A.
Summary: Symbiotic stars belong to a subclass of variable stars with
two extremely different types of spectroscopic features, one being typical
for hot stars and the other for late type giants. They are generally
explained by two models: the accretion and the nebular and are considered
to be a transition type during the evolution of some types of binaries into
planetary nebulae.

Title: Encounter with Gaspra
- Authors:

Summary: The spacecraft "Galileo" has on its mission toward Jupiter
encountered the asteroid Gaspra and sent valuable data and images of it.
The observations lead to the conclusion that Gaspra is a relatively young
object. They are also important for the determination of the increasing
rate of concentration of small bodies in the asteroid belt.
