Summary: The project comprises synthetic and structural
investigations of mercury compounds, transition metal complexes and
biologically active substances. In particular, it considers the
dimercuration of organomercury compounds by exchanging mercury with another
atom, and the mercuration of aliphatic carboxylic and keto acids, ketones
and of permercurated methane derivatives. In the connection with the
broader study on coordination and stereochemistry of the transition metal
complexes it includes the syntheses and structural caracterizations of
molybdenum,nickel, copper, cobalt, iron and platinum group complexes with
the ligands interesting in the biological systems. Such complexes can be
used as models for the better understading of function and activity of
biologically interesting molecules as well as of some catalytical
processes. The project includes also the structural investigations of
organic molecules with antibiotical,antibacterial and antiviral activity.
The synthesis and structure of calcium phosphates and carboxylates
important in the biomineralization processes are also studied.The
stereochemical studies include also the structural investigation of the
compounds with the lone electron pair at the central atom. As part of the
above structural work a development of the new computing methods in the
X-ray structure analysis is also included.

Research goals: Objectives of the proposed research is the synthesis
and the structure determination of mercury compounds, complex compounds of
transition and other metals and of biologically and pharmacologically
active compounds. New numerical methods used in the structure analysis as
well as software will be developed. a) Demercuration of organomercury
compounds and the synthesis of the new salts of permercurated methane.
Mercury compounds, their crystal structures and the crystal chemistry of
mercury. b) The new transition metal complexes will be studied as possible
models of biological systems as well as potential catalysts, particularly
of molybdenum complexes and the trans-influence of the oxo-O ligands. The
synthesis and structure determination of the new Mo-complexes with oxygen,
nitrogen and sulphur as donors. The transition metals complexes, their
stereochemistry and coordinating properties of specific ligands. The
complexes of the platinum group elements as potential catalysts and
anticancer agents. c) Structural investigations of compounds with
antibiotic, antibacterial and antiviral activity (e.g macrolide
antibiotics and their complexes, beta-lactams etc.). Heterocyclic
compounds and their regio- and stereoselective inter- and intramolecular
addition mechanisms. Pyridinium-oximes similar to Ach and nicotine and
their antidotal activity. The structure of new metal complexes with
macrocyclic ethers. d) The calcium phosphate carboxylates and their
importance for calcification and biomineralization. e) Stereochemical
role of the unshared electron pair in the structure of the acetates of the
V b group elements.
