Summary: The removal of ammonia from mineral medium containing knownconcentrations of ammonia (up to 300 mg/L) and from ground waterby biological oxidation was studied. Nitrifying bacteria wereisolated from ground water containing ammonia. Ammonium ion wasdetermined by a standard titration technique while nitrite andnitrate ions were determined by ion chromatography (IC Supersepanion column) using 1.5 mM phtalic acid solution containing 5 %acetonitril as eluent. Depending on its concentration in waterbiooxidation of ammonia lasted from 48 hours till three weeks.

Summary: Mycelial Pellets of Trichoderma viride were used forbiodegradation of naturally occurring and commercial humicsubstances from aqueous solutions. Experiments were carried outat 25 0C and pH=6.0. Removal of humic substances from the aqueousphase was monitored by following the COD-ellimination, fungalgrowt and decrease of adsorbance at 370 nm. Within 10 days 42 %of HAS (soil humic acids), 44% of FAS (soil fulvic acids) and 67% of HAF (Fluka humic acids) were removed from the solution. Itwas found out that beside degradation, adsorption of humicsubstances onto fungal mycelia play a significant role in thisprocess.

Summary: A study of the sanitary quality of 16 water sources (springs, well, accumulation) was undertaken in the continental and coastalpart of Republic of Croatia. Physical, chemical and microbiological analysis were performedusing standard methods and the results measured according toCroatian portability standards. The research shows that many drinking water soruces had highervalues than permitted by water standards presently in use. Thecertain factors may play a role in improvment of water qualitysuch as environmental sanitary protection of water soruces, permanent quality control and appropiate methods for watertreatment.

Summary: Microbial cells contain enzymes that can catalyze the conversionof substrates into products detectable by electrochemicalsensors. Since the enzymes are already contained in optimalenvironments provided by nature, the use of microorganisms myhelp in extending the lifetime of biosensors. A biosensor using cell of mixed microbial culture (Pseudomopnas,Bacillus and Candida) and an oxygen electrode was developed forthe detection of phenol in model wastewater. The microbial cellswere immobilized in plyacrylamide gel and attached to the surfaceof the oxygen electrode. In a view of response time, stability and sensitivity, thebiosensors performed best at 25 0 C, pheonol concentration up to2*10-3 M and between pH 6.0 and 7.0. The response time fordetermination of phenol in wastewater was within 15 min while forthe higher phenol concentration (5*10-3 M) within 60 min. Thefinal valule and the rate of oxygen decrease were dependent onphenol concentration in wastewater. The current output of thesensor was constant for more than 7 days. Immobilized cell werestoraged in refrigerator at +4 0 C for 30 days and afteractivation in the growth medium for 8 hours, the sam results wereobtained.

Summary: The removal of humic substances from aqueous solution at pH=6 and 25 C by pure culture of Aspergillus and Trichodema has beenexamined. Natural humic and fulvic acids isolated from soil andcommercial sample of humic acids purchased from Fluka were usedin this study. The removal of humic substances from aqueous phasewas monitored by following the decrease in apsorbance at 370 nm.COD and fungal growth were also measured. The initialconcentration of humic and fulvic acids, contact time and diameters of fungal pellets were found to be the most importantparameters. The results suggested that decolorization of batchculture was a consequence of several processes. In the first 24hours adsorption of humic substances on fungal pellets wasdominant. Afterwards, desorption of slightly bound humicsubstances and their decomposition, as well as decomposition ofremaining humic substances in the solution, continuedsimultaneously through the period of 10 days

Summary: Nitrification is an important microbiological process in theoxidation of ammonia in aquatic environments. Ammonia isconverted sequentially to nitrite and nitrate by two groups ofchemolithotrophic nitrifying organisms, tehe ammonia-oxidasingbacteria and the nitrite-oxidasing bacteria. Elimination ofammonia produces more bacteriologically stable drinking water andreduces the cost associated with additional desinfectantrequirements. the removal of ammonia from mineral medium containing knownconcentration of ammonia (up to 300 mg/L) and form ground waterby biological oxidation was studied. Nitrifying bacteria (generaNitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) were isolated from groundwatercontaining ammonia. Ammonium ion was determined by standard titration technique whilenitrite and nitrate ions by ion chromatography (Methrom,Ionenchromatograph 69o, IC Supersep anion column) using 2.5 mMphtalic acid and 5 % acetonitril as eluent. Depending on ammonia concentration in water biooxidation lastedfrom 48 till three weeks.

Summary: Careful consideration should be given to microorganisms indrinking water quality evaluation form the sanitary point ofview, at autopurification of the surface waters and in theprocesses of biological waste water treatment. Biological analysis differs from physical and chemical analysisbecause biochemical reacitions of microorganisms are oftenunpredictable and depend on environmental factors and microbialspecies as well. Therefore these analyses are specific, startingwith the collection of samples, them transporting to thelaboratory, their examination and the final presentation ofresults. The objective of this paper is to present the ways of sampling, the course of microbiological analysis, possible errors in theresults of examining drinking waters, surface waters and wastewaters are analysed.

Summary: the removal of humic substances present at high concentrationlevels by pure culture of Aspergillus, beside the decompositionof humic macromelecules, involves theri adsorption on to fungalpellets. The asorption is especially dominant in the first 24hours of the contact. The main factors that influence theadsorption of humic and fulvic acids from aqueous phaseare the pH, the concentration of humic substances, anddiameters of fungal pellets, as well as the type andcharacteistics of humic substances. Natural humic andfulvic acids isolated from the soil by alkaline extractionand commercial sample of humic acids (Fluka) have been used inthis study. The experimental results show that adsorption coefficients(expressed by Freundlich isotherme) increase with decreasing ofthe pH and the increasing of pellet diameters.

Summary: It is well known that filamentous species of mikroorganisms(molds and actinomycetes) are useful in production or indegradation of complex organic compounds. Removal of pollutantsfrom aqueous solultion by fliamentous microorganisms has recentlyreceived a great deal of attention. Application of suchmicroorganisms for these purposes depend on environmentalconditions and on the shape of mycelial biomass. The evidence of microbial growth is found in the formation ofdifferent morphological shapes of mycelium which is affected bymany factors. It is desirable that in a submerged culture thesemicroorgansims form pellets of definite size, shape andconsistency. The mycelial growth is a significant parameter for production oforganic substances (e.g. citric acid) and for removal ofpollutants (heavy metals, complex organic compounds) from aqueoussolutions with the help of a living microbial biomass.

Summary: Heavy metals, due to their toxicity, are well known polutants, thus their qualitative and quantitative determination in foodproducts and wastewaters of the food industry is of specialimportance. For their determination sensitive electroanalyticaltechniques ma by used. However their succesful applicationdepends on the efficiency of the preceeding sample diggestionstep. Different digestion procedures and electroanalyicaltechniques were investigated. It was find that wet digestionwith mineral acids in presence of hydrogen peroxide is one ofthe best method of mineralisation of food products, while ozongives satisfactory results only at digestion of natural water andbiologicaly treated wastewater samples. Conditions forsimultaneous electroanalytical determination of series of metalslike selenium, chromium, nickel, zinc, cadmium, lead and copperare defined and apropiate determination procedures have beenworked out.
