Summary: In order to increase the efficiency of water and wastewater treatment processes and/or to develop new, improved ones, the processes and process mechanisms of removal of ammonia, iron, manganese, and humic substances, as well as the redox mechanisms of the electrochemical removal of manganese from ground water will be studied under different conditions. Moreover, new analytical techniques, suitable for automatic water quality control during treatment will be investigated and introduced. Methods and techniques of water and wastewater treatment processes scale-up using pilot-plants will be developed and tested as well as.

Keywords: Waste water, drinking water, water treatment, electrochemical procedured, pilot plants, water quality, investigations of

Research goals: Water treatment belongs to the most important tools for pollution control of the natural-water resources. It is also frequently the only way of obtaining drinking water of required quality. The overall purification efficiency of a treatment plant is generally determined by the selected purification process, by its control during the treatment and by the construction of the treatment plant. Thus, attempts to improve purification efficiency have to take all these components into consideration. In order to explain the mechanisms of some side reactions, to eliminate them and to improve the efficiency of the drinking water treatment processes, the mechanisms of elimination of ammonia on biological filters in the presence of insufficient amounts of oxygen, a phenomenon which may appear in some type of filter beds, will be studied. The rate and oxygenation reaction mechanisms of iron and manganese in the presence of humic substances which hinder their oxygenation rate, as well as the process of elimination of the humic substances and other persistent substances like betaine, will be studied in detail. The mechanisms of the chemical and electrochemical processes appearing during the electrochemical manganese removal from drinking water, a new promising process due to small volumes of the treatment plants in comparison with the conventional ones, will be also investigated. Attempts will be made to develop analytical procedures suitable for automatic control of the purification processes, like ionic chromatography, voltammetry and others. Moreover, the applicability of ozone for sample treatment preceding the analysis, will be reviewed. The application of ozone, in comparison with the wet digestion procedures, may have significant advantages. Ozone is easily applicable in automatic analysis, thus determination of total nitrogen, and total phosphorus might be easily automatized. Besides, ozone significantly eliminates contamination of samples by impurities introduced through diverse chemicals, which is of special importance in trace analysis. Methods and techniques of the water and wastewater treatment processes scale-up will be applied and developed. To increase reliability and decrease investigation costs, a system of remote control of the pilot-plants will be developed. To find out proper treatment process for some typical wastewaters of urban and industrial origin pilot-plant, studies applying aerobic and/or anaerobic treatment processes will be performed.
