Summary: The influence of the solvent composition on the extraction ofgallium in the systems: (I) GaCl3 - HCl - H2O - Diisopropyl Ether(IPE) - Hexyl Alcohol and (II) GaCl3 - HCl - H2O - IPE - i-PentylAlcohol was examined. At equal initial concentration ofhydrochloric acid (5.0 mol.dm-3) in both systems a strongsynergistic enhancement at 20 per cent vol. content of alcohol inthe mixed solvent was observed. The maximum value of synergisticenhancement, expressed as delta-Dc depended on alcohol type andmetal concentration. In the case of 0.147 mol.dm-3 initialgallium concentration in system I the value of Dc was about 600and in the system II about 300. At the same acid concentrationbut at lower initial concentration of Ga(III) (0.028 mol.dm-3) insystem I a stronger synergisic effect (delta Dc about 1300) wasfound.

Summary: To determine cerium content in liqwuid extracts recovered fromnitric acid solutions a suitable quantitative method of analysiswas required. As conditions of Ce(IV) extraction were examined inpure systems as well as in the systems wherw the presence ofcerium was accompanied by that of some other lanthanides from thecerium subgroup (La, Nd, Sm, Eu), the method had to be fast, simple, selective and readily available. The possibility ofapplaing x-ray emission spectrometry for this purpose wasexamined. Among a relative large number of factors influencingthe sensitivity of x-ray emission spectrometry in this paper theeffect of the matrix and that of radiation-path medium wereassessed.

Summary: To determine the cause of catalyst deactivation, in addition tostandard methods of analysis, X-ray diffraction and SEM wereused. Real and model samples of UOP-R-62 were analysed. Theobtained diffractometer patterns, FWHM value of the 440reflection of gamma-Al2O3, electron micrographs and images ofemitted caracteristic X-ray were mutually compared. Only thevalues obtained from the deactivated catalyst differed from theothers.Besides reduced broadening of the 440 line the materialexhibited new X-ray diffraction lines, a chenge in phasecomposition, and modifications in morphology andmicrostructure. These changes are an indication that overheatingof individual spheres of catalyst UOP-R-62 to a temperature of700-1100 C or higher caused their deactivation.

Summary: The alloys of chromium and cobalt are widely used in dentistry as they, considering their mechanical properties, represent the best substitute for expensive gold alloys. During the production of various dental appliances, a greater amount of the material is used then required by size of the appliance itself. The remaining material is often used for subsequent castings, as a measure of economy. The aim of the study was the examine the influence of the addition of various amounts of an already cast alloy on hardness of the alloys of chromium and cobalt. The properties of the alloys were examined after the addition of the previously cast alloy in percentages of 0%,25%,50%,75%,100%. All samples were standardized and cast in a Nautilus (Bego) induction casting oven. After the treatment, the samples were examined. The results on hardness and their statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the examined alloys; the difference of the nature of the added components contributing more to it then the amount of the already cast alloy.

Summary: Cobalt-chromium alloys are used in various reconstructive procedures in prosthodontics. They are most commonly used for metal constructions of partial prostheses. The casting procedures require more metal to melt than is needed to fill the cast out. The excess is then separated from the casting. The possibility of re-usage of this excess alloy to make a usable casting has been investigated in many studies. The aim of this experimantal study was to assess the extent of changes occurring in cobalt-chromium alloys with the addition of various percentages of pre-cast alloys (B). The Wironium, Wironit (Bego) and Basil S (Zlatarna Celje) alloys were investigated with addition of 0%, 25%. 50%, 75% and 100% of a pre-cast alloy (B). Results of the study showed the changes occuring in the metallographic structure and thus in the chemical composition of the alloys to be within acceptable limits, indicating the possibility of re-usage of the cobalt-chromium alloys, with certain limitations.

Summary: During the production of various dental appliances a largerammount of material is used then would be required by the actualsize of the appliance. The purpose of this study was to examinethe influence of the addition of various amounts of previouslycast alloy (B) on the hardness, metallographic structure, chemicalcomposition and carbon concentration of Co-Cr alloys. Theproperties of the alloys were examined after the addition of thepreviously cast alloy in the percentages of 0%,25%,50%,75% and100%. All samples (Wironium,Wironit,Basil S) were standardizedand cast in an induction casting machine (Nautilus,Bego).Theresults of optical microscopy tests show a similar microstructureof all samples regardless of the nature and an amount of theadded alloy B.An insignificant increase of all components wasdetected after chemical analysis without significant effect onthe quality of the samples. The data regarding hardness and theirstatistical analysis showed a significant difference between thealloys examined. However the alloy components contribute more tothis difference then the amount of previously cast alloy (B).

Summary: The recovery of cobalt by leaching of lateritic ore (withsulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid and their mixture) andextraction (with Cyanex 272) of cobalt and nickel from leachliquors and in prepared samples has been investigated. Theinfluence of temperature, leaching time, initial ore/acid massratio, initial acid concentration, initial phase volume ratios, initial pH, and diluent type on the selectivity and efficiency ofleaching and solvent extraction was found. The method of removingthe interfering metals was found too. Under certain conditions ofextraction from sulphate-chloride solution formation of thirdliquid phase was observed.
Keywords: hidrometallurgy, solvent extraction, cobalt(II), nickel(II), leaching, separation, mutual influence of metals, third phase, influence of initial conditions, phosphinic acid , Cyanex 272

Summary: The blast furnace slag is the most frequently used secondary rawmaterial. In order to enable application of the slag inconstruction of buildings and perhaps, find some otherapplication, various chemical properties of blast furnace slagwere examined (by means of standard procedures ), as well asradiochemical properties (by means of gamma-spectrometryinvestigation ) and slag phase composition (by means of x -raysdiffraction method ). Morfology and distribution of elements ofidentified phases were examined (by means of scanning electronicmicroscopy), as well as anion exchange properties of blastfurnace slag in reactions between the slag and series of anions:F(-), Cl (-),Br(-),NO3(-),NO2(-) and SO4(--) which may influencethe concrete (by means of ion chromatographic analysis ).By meansof statistic method (Monte Carlo ),two samples of blast furnacewere chosen and been under temperature treatment for two hours at200,400,600.800 and 1000 C. 15% of slag treated in such way ,wasmixed with clinker in cement. The mechanical and physicalproperties of cement were examined (by means of the standardprocedures). Extensive slag examination showed stable chemicalcomposition of the slag, low radioactivity and well-balancedrelation between acid and basic components.Detailed slagproperties determination by means of ion chromatography showedthat the slag is a chemically inert material, whose anions do notelute in the environment. On the other hand, slag has proved to bea verz good fluoride sorbent, therefore slag applicationpossibilities,as anew material in technology for treatment offluoride contaminated water, are extended. Under temperaturetreatment of blast furnace slag, the share of characteristicglassy phase decreased and the share of crystalline wasincreased. At 600 C and higher, some new phases, not identified ininitial samples, appeared. Mechanical properties of Portlandcement with activated blast furnace slag as admixture, were notconsiderably changed in relation to Portland cement withadmixture of inactivated slag.
