Summary: The purpose of this fundamental project is to develop a
digital simulation method for investigation of the fate of solutes in
natural waters. The investigation of the sorption of solutes on
solid-liquid interfaces (for example on surfaces of suspended partices and
sediments) and complexation of micro-constituents in water with natural
organic macromolecules as ligands will have the priority in such
investigations. In both cases the interaction of solutes with large number
of different active sites with a whole variety of different binding
strengths takes place. The results of such fundamental investigations will
be incorporated in the development of digital simulation of the transport
and the fate of pollutants in ground waters of the Sava river aluvium in
the environment of the city of Zagreb. Through additional projects special
measures will be designed for the protection of water sources and
improvement of water supply for the city of Zagreb. Land based sources of
pollution of the Adriatic sea in the Republic of Croatia will be estimated
including all anthropogenic and natural sources. Anthropogenic sources
include all sewage water of households and industries, while natural
sources include precipitation and river inputs.

Research goals: The purpose of these investigations is to develop
digital simulation of physical and chemical processes in natural waters and
at geological and biological (solid/liquid) interfaces. To this purpose the
results of laboratory, field and remote sensing investigations should be
used. By the application of digital simulation the mechanisms of
homogeneous and heterogeneous chemical reactions taking place in natural
waters and at geological and biological (solid/liquid) interfaces under the
influence of mass transport will be investigated. Application of new
knowledge about such processes can enable interpretation of laboratory,
field and remote sensing investigations. On the basis of these
investigations the prediction of physical and chemical processes in natural
waters and at geological and biological (solid/liquid) interfaces will be
performed. For succesful performance of these investigations the
collaboration with water works development projects is very important. The
amount of waste waters from heterogeneous sources and their input to the
sea will be estimated. The analysed pollutants will include nutrients,
hydrocarbons and heavy metals. The results could be used for estimation of
the recieving capacity and for the improvement of the regional planning and
management.
