Summary: The project deals with the characterization of
physico-chemical effects of ionizing radiations in various model and
real systems. The selection of systems for the investigation of
physico-chemical effects of ionizing radiations is determined by the
interest borne by those systems upon various aspects of the interactions
of radiations and matter. The investigations of the nature and fate of the
reactive short-lived species formed by the radiolysis: electrons, positive
ions, excited molecules and free radicals belong to the fundamental
research of the interactions between radiations and matter. This research
is carried out in simple aqueous and organic solutions. Physico-chemical
effects of ionizing radiations can be used for the measurement of the
radiation energy absorbed in a system, which is then called a dosimetry
system. According to the range of the doses measured, the subjects of the
project are dosimetry systems based on inducing thermoluminescence of
solids or on inducing permanent chemical changes in solutions. The
development and characterization of dosimetry systems capable for
measuring doses over a range of 12 orders of magnitude are also the
subject of this project. Technological applications of irradiation are
based on the biocidal effect of ionizing radiations upon microorganisms
which happen to be contaminating pharmaceutical and medical materials and
foods. While the biological effect of irradiation is dramatic, the
physico-chemical effect is often hardly noticable. It is a challenge for
radiation chemistry to identify and quantify these physico-chemical
effects. Radiation induced effects in polymers have been studied using
double-modulation electron spin resonance combined with size exclusion
chromatography and positron lifetime spectroscopy combined with infrared
spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Informations on free volume changes and
local side-chain motions in polymer matrix due to radiation induced
crosslinking or degradation were obtained. The possibility of reusing of
waste rubber after radiation grafting was studied. Positive results were
obtained in the case of grafting polybutadiene granulate with ethyl
acrylate. The nature of observed liquid-liquid transition in unsaturated
polyester resins was studied. Kinetics and mechanism of high conversion
copolymerization of electron acceptor and electron donor comonomers were
studied by microcalorimetric method. It was observed that in the case of
copolymerization of alfa-methylstyrene with alkylmaleimides in the
presence of an exces of homopolymerizable alkylmaleimide alternating
copolymers are quantitatively formed prior to the formation of
homopolymer. The blends of elastomeric polyurethane with different
plastomers and polystyrene with natural rubber were prepared and
characterized.
Research goals: The scope of investigation is the nature and fate of
short-lived reactive species which are formed in the interactions of
ionizing radiations and matter: electrons, positive ions, excited
molecules and free radicals. A particular emphasis is on the reactions of
electrons, being universal products of all ionizations, and on free
radicals which are the main intermediates in the oxidative degradation of
biomolecules. The knowledge of the fundamental regularities in the
interaction of reactive species with the molecules of the medium makes it
possible to predict chemical changes in irradiated matter, including
biological consequences, as well as a systematic approach to radiation
protection and radiation processing. Radiation protection, radiation
processing and radiation research all depend on the well-established
relationships between the absorbed dose and an effect. Therefore the scope
is also the development of dosimetry methods applicable in the broad
ranges of doses, dose rates and radiation qualities, and based on the
physico-chemical changes in irradiated dosimetric materials -solids and
solutions. The scope of the technological applications of irradiation as a
biocidal agent is microbiological decontamination, pasteurization and
sterilization of medical and pharmaceutical materials, as well as foods.
It is necessary to demonstrate previously that irradiation does not
produce any detrimental physico-chemical consequences which might
jeopardize functionality and wholesomeness, the basic criterion for this
being radiation-chemical changes. The scope is the development and
application of methods suitable for detection and quantification of
physico-chemical changes in irradiated matter. In the field of polymer
research the goals are: - Radiation modification of polymers by ionising
radiation, with the aim to explain the effects of irradiation in polymers
and to improve the polymer properties. - Investigation of the nature of a
new transition observed in unsaturated polyester resins, which could be
described as liquid-liquid transition. - The investigation of kinetics and
mechanism of copolymerization of electron donor and electron acceptor
monomers where alternating copolymerization is preferred, to explain the
role of CT-complex in the reaction. - Investigation of phase structure
interaction on different structure level, miscibility and morphology of
blends of elastomeric polyurethane with different elastomers or polar
plastomeric components to improve properties and processability.
