Summary: Investigations within the project encompass: (a) Synthesis, spectroscopic and theoretical studies of 7-oxanorbornenes connected via sigma, pi or aromatic bridges with emphasis on studying nature of long-range intramolecular interactions between lone pairs and their influence on the extent of pi,pi-interactions within considered molecules; (2) Synthesis, spectroscopic and theoretical studies of strained organic and organometallic compounds; (3) Thermochemistry of novel organometallic derivatives of cyclopropene; (4) development of ionic hydrogenation systems of interest for coal chemistry.

Research goals: The results are expected (1) to contribute to the understanding of the mechanism of intramolecular orbital interactions of interest for understanding electron transfer processes in fused 7-oxanorbornenes and their saturated and/or substituted analogues ; (2) to provide a firm experimental basis for understanding the influence of 14b metals on the electronic structure and reactivity of strained hydrocarbons; (3) to contribute to the development of new building blocks and reagents for their "glueing" into macropolycyclic systems of practical interest as well as to the development of specific, highly selective reaction procedures (as ionic hydrogenation), thus leading eventually to new useful materials; (4) to shed light on the reactivity and biochemical activity of vitamin C derivatives.
