Summary: A comparison of the coastal phytocoenoses of the Balkans and Asia Minor shows that intertidal algae and saltmarsh halophyte communities are similar to those of the W Mediterranean, while the psammophytic communities are more different. The calcified algal deposits in the upper infralittoral subzone (Corallinion), and the frutescent rockbush in calcareous sea-cliffs of Greece and S Turkey (Ptilostemetalia) and of teh Black Sea and eastren Adriatic (Aurinietalia) represent the most peculiar formations of the area investigated.

Summary: As a result of the contrasting climates from the central mountains to the Pannonian plain and the Maditerranean coast, and also due to dissected karst relief and calcareous substrates in the Dinaric ranges and the Adriatic archipelago, the vascular flora of Croatia is very diversified. There are 4300 taxa with 703 endemics, and the varied vegetation has 274 climax and edaphic phytocoenoses of different ecology and composition. The climax forests show two main types of altitudinal zonation: the northern or continental with a sequence of 6 altitudinal climaxes, and the southern or mediterranean, in Dalmatia, with 8 orographic climaxes. Besides that there are also 14 rich, optimal protoclimaxes in the karst sinkholes and river canyons, 19 different xero-basiphilous rockwoods of windswept areas and karst escarpments, and also 17 rare acidophilous forest types in silicous oases. The permanent edaphic types of natural herbaceous vegetation include 28 varied cummunities of aeolian grasslands on windswept mountains and seashores, extensive rocky screes (19 communities) across the karstic scarps, an altitudinal sequence of diversified palaeoendemic chasmophytes (39 communities) in giant calcareous escarpments, and even 18 sciophytic communities of ferns in numerous shady caves and ravines. The swamp communities and degraded anrthropogenic vegetation are largely similar to those elsewhere in southern Europe.

Summary: The genus Scutellinia so far contains 45 recognized species with 14 recorded in Croatia during seven year research on operculates: Scutellinia crinita, S. setossisima, S. setosa, S. vitreola, S. patagonica, S. umbrarum, S. cejpii, S. trechispora, S. legaliae, S. minor, S. heterosculputrata, S. subhirtella, S. kerguelensis and S. superba. As all previous mycofloristic data for our country is small in number and questionable, these 14 species are considered to be reported for Croatia for the first time. All treated taxa are described in their principal, differential characters, micromorphollogically depicted on the level of some selected collections and graphically treated in order to illustrate their morphological variation. Less known and/or critical species (S. setosissima, S. setosa, S. vitreola and S. heterosculpturata) are described in more detail. All taxa are described and graphically treated in the ecological sense with their geographical distribution shown on the UTM maps.

Summary: The Croatian firwoods include 3 main fir ecotypes in 12 different firwood communities. The mesic-acidophilic firwoods (Abieti-Fagetum, Blechno-Abietetum etc.) are marked by the typical Abies alba. The mesothermic and basophilic firwoods of A. alba ssp. illyrica in the Dinaric Karst include the montane climax Seslerio-Abietetum Fuk., then Carpino-Abietetum Fuk. et Fab. in the continental hills, subalpine Piceo-Abietetum illyricae Fuk. on stormy mountains, and also some escarpment rockwoods (Calamagrostio-Abietion Horv.): Calamagrostio-Abietetum Horv. and Oreoherzogio-Abietetum (Fuk.) n.comb. and Abieti-Pinetum nigrae (Fuk.) n.comb. The third endemic A. pardei (= A. biokovoensis) grows in the xeric coastal firwoods (Abieti-Quercion Barb. et Qu.) of SW Croatia: submediterranean highwoods Ostryo-Abietetum pardei (Kuš.) Lov., xeric semi-evergreen pseudomaquis Orno-Abietetum Lov. et Rac in coastal windsweeps, then Ribeso-Abietetum Lov. et Rac on exposed cliffs, and Querco-Abietetum illyricae (Šafar) Lov. in the landward foehn valleys.

Summary: Although the silver fir is poorly variable in Europe, its southeast populations in the Balkans originate from some intergressions with the southern mediterranean firs resulting in the endemic subspecies and some natural hybrids: xeric type Abies pardei Gaus. (= A. biokovoensis Kuš.), endemic in the coastal karst of southwest Croatia; the European mesic type of A. alba Mill. ssp. alba, and its subspecies illyrica Fuk. (= var. dinarica Swob., A. alba X pardei), endemic in the calcareous Dinaric Alps; A. borisii-regis Mattf. (= A. alba X cephalonica) in central Balkans, and A. macedonica Fuk. (= A. pardei X borisii-regis), endemic in the southwest Balkans. The original A. pardei has benn described in cultivations (France), and its new natural sites are along the northeast Adriatic coast from Rijeka to Central Dalmatia, the largest forestlands being in the Vinodol hilly areas and Central Velebit north from Karlobag and to the south upon the Biokovo mountain.

Summary: Solar irradiance modeling on relief surface for ecological research and regional planning is presented here. It is developed in form of standard raster-GIS procedure as an integration of following basic functions: 1. surface slope and aspect for each pixel; 2. Sun elevation and Sun azimuth for given latitude, day number and Sun hour angle; 3. pixel-Sun visibility as a function of Sun elevation, pixel altitude and altitudes of all pixels in Sun azimuth; 4. regression model of hourly global solar irradiance on a horizontal surface; 5. regression model of diffuse component portion in global radiation. With this procedure solar irradiance modeling is possible for every digitized and rasterized relief surface for given day and hour. Diffuse radiation is also function of surface albedo, which can vary in dependance of surface altitude and aspect in period of snow thawing. Development of model of snow thawing space distribution as a function of either surface altitude and aspect or required cumulative of solar radiation, in both cases with additional landscape measurements, will be necessary for solar irradiance modeling on mosaic snowy surfaces. Model testing and first practical application have been performed for National park Risnjak. Map 1 is a map of daily clear-sky solar irradiance for June, 15, values in (J/cm2), painted in grey scale, with range from 0 = black to 2575 = white. Map 2 is a analogous map for December, 15, with the same gray scale as for June, with range from 0 to 845 (J/cm2). All functions mentioned here are available in IBM-PC or full compatible raster-GIS software "GRID 1.0".

Summary: In Croatia litter arthropod fauna researches are insufficiently conducted. Wood community researches of Gorski Kotar are the only systematic one. In this paper we present number, activity and diversity of arthropod fauna in Piceetum croaticum montanum wood community of National park "Risnjak" during vegetational period 1990. and 1991. With pitfall traps 123.375 specimens from 18 orders were collected. The specimans from all orders were most active at the end of spring and beggining of summer. The dominant orders were detritivorous insects (Collembola) and carnivorous arthropods (Aranea and Coleoptera). From the results we conclude that the trophic relations are not disarranged in spite of a large burden of acid rain in Gorski Kotar.

Summary: In the Mt. Velebit area there was no systematic research of bugs (Heteroptera). From the collections of Croatian Natural History Museum, author's own collections and according to already published data, author identified 72 bug species belonging to 20 families from the Mt. Velebit area. Of those, 34 species from 16 families were found in the area of N.P. "Paklenica". Most of the species have common palearctic, euromediterranean-central asian, holarctic and euro-siberian distribution. A few species have ponto-mediterranean, european-central asian and euromediterranean-central asian-indian distribution. Number of montane species is small, and endemic species have not been found. Since this area was researched only indigently, there will probably be found much more bug species, and also some endemic ones, if more systematic research in this area would be conducted.

Summary: After our analyses of specific biocoenoses in the extreme windsweeps and stormbelts of coastal Dinarides and Adriatic islands, among the xeric vegetation also come rare taxa of resisting fauna repeated. The most remarkable are the nesting birds Gyps fulvus, Falco naumanni, Bubo bubo, Apus melba, Ptyonoprogne rupestris, Burrhinus oedicnemus, and in stormy seashores Sterna hirundo, Puffinus puffinus, Calonectris diomedea, Phalacrocorax aristotelis etc. Among reptiles are resisting Algyroides nigropunctatus, Podarcis sicula, P. melisellensis, Lacerta mosorensis and Telescopus fallax (the sensitive Viperidae are mostly absent). Among the amphibians only Bufo viridis is resisting in stormbelts. Concerning the few studied insects, we registered the abundant Syrphidae pollinating some black-flowering endemics. Also resisting are the Karst snails Aegopis, Medora, Monacha, Trichia, Helicigona, Clausilia and Cochlostoma. In stormy seashores are very resisting the sessile mollusks Lemantina arenaria, Patella athletica, Gastrochaena dubia and Middendorfia caprearum, synascidia Sarcobotrylloides superbus, hydrozoans Aglaophenia septifera and Dynamene cavolinii, echinoderms Coscinasterias tenuispina and Arbacia lixula, and minute fishes Salaria zvonimiri, Spelaeogobius trigloides and Tripterygium minor.

Summary: Aim of this paper is conception of biological data base for Bugs (Heteroptera, Insecta) in Croatia. At the same time, spatial and taxonomic expansion to the wider area and other groups of insects is planned. Making of data base has begun on the personal computer (PC) and DOS - MS Windows environment, but it should be ported to the other platforms also: SQL and Oracle under UNIX operating system, and hypertext - World Wide Web; multimedia with sound, picture and movie support too. In the final version, on-line access and querying via Internet is also planned. Data base should include all data about collections, specimens, taxa, and literature too.

Summary: The transects across the three biggest coastal mountains at the Adriatic and the richest endemic nodes in the Dinarides (Velebit, Biokovo and Orjen), defined by the binary vectors of alliances according to the Zrich-Montpellier phytosociological school, have been compared by the methods of numerical syntaxonomy. Definition of the three geosystem types (N Dinaric inland, transitional, S Dinaric coastal) with their specific alliances is possible by the classification of transects. The maritime impact through the river canyons reduces the vegetation contrast between inland and coastal slopes. The seriation of the basic data-matrix, a gradual exchange of alliances within the same vegetational type and scattering of the transects and alliances on the first ordination axis suggest the existance of the climatic macrogradient. Transect scores on the second ordination axis is significantly correlated with a transect vegetational diversity (number of alliances per transect) and it could represent a decreasing of the range of humidity and warmth on the transects. This is confirmed with a comparison of the total mountain vegetational diversity (Mann-Whitney test), where Orjen is the most diverse and Velebit is subsequent, analogous with a varying ranges of mean annual precipitation and temperature on the mountains. The transect vegetational diversity is not correlated with a transect altitude, due to the hypothetical impact of the cold Bora wind (compression of vegetational zones).

Summary: The microclimatic differences (based on the field measurements) and topoclimatic differences (based on the phytocoenosis average relative direct insolation modelling derived from the phytocoenological map, digital terrain model and ephemeridas) between the phytocoenoses in the sinkhole have been tested and interpreted statistically. The relation between the microclimate and the topoclimate has been examined and applicability of the community approach has been indirectly tested. Daily air temperature dynamics is basically conditioned by the insolation and night temperature dynamics is conditioned by the altitude in the sinkhole (temperature inversion). The insolation quantity significantly correlate with the air temperature (positively) and relative air moisture (negatively), only after the weigthing by the relative illumination (level of the canopy shading) in the phytocoenosis. The first and only significant factor (principal component) of the soil temperature dynamics at the four soil depths is not correlated with the air temperature dynamics that suggest the particularity of the thermic processes in the soil. It seems that used community approach is not appropriate for this kind of research, due to the described relation between the microclimate and the topoclimate and also unsatisfied space resolution. These results are support to the further development of the topoclimatical modelling as the raster-GIS procedure and its application in the vegetation science, that could eliminate mentioned faults.
