Summary: The karstic ecosystems of calcareous substrata cover more
than a half of Republic of Croatia and even 3/4 of all areas inhabited by
Croats, but their biogeography and synecology so far has been considerably
less studied than the non-karstic (siliceous) areas in Croatia. Their
research program included the analyses of the vascular and thallophyte
floras, and of the vertebrate fauna in correlation to the lithological and
bioclimatic facators in selected connecting sites, then followed by the
systematical
synoptical mapping in 1:500.000 of the biocoenoses and ecosystems across
the entire Croatian Karst, and at the end, a detailed mapping in 1:50.000
in the most rich and specific areas. Furthermore, we also analysed the
gradient structure of karst
ecosystems in the biocoenotical landscape complexes of their bioclimatic
macrozonation, and of the uppermost degrees of plurizonal geosystems and
nodaxial biogenic suprastructures, after the modern geoecological
methodology in west Europe
and America. We also treated the typology, classification and biodynamics
of the earlier and extinct palaeocoenoses of Croatian Karst areas in the
geological history, after the recent exact methods of the palaeocoenology
as developed in world.
Research goals: a) Organizing and completing of an interdisciplinary
research group for the Karst ecology and biogeography. b) Teaching and
specializing of the young scientists in different specialities viz.
geobotany, zooecology, geoecology, pedoecology, cartography etc., and their
specializing may be completed by their M.Sc. or D.Sc. theses in the Karst
problematics. c) Publishing of the cartographic surveys of the typlogy and
zoning of ecosystems and biocoenoses in Croatian Karst with also their
applied extrapolations in 1:500.000, including the degrees of degradation,
threatening, diversity and richness, then also some detailed
ecological-topographical maps in 1:50.000 of the richest representative
Karst areas. d) Detailed studies on the dynamical evolution sequences of
extinct and recent karstic biocoenoses and ecosystems during the geological
history, and after this also a prognosis of the future biocoenoses and
ecosystems in Croatian Karst related to actual climatic changes and human
degradation. e) After the expected results combined with the earlier
informations, we intend to present a regional cartographic subdivision of
the Croatian Karst in relation to the optimal possibilities of its future
rational uses, including the demarcation of the zones of minimal risks with
maximal exploitation potentials, and the areas needing the prioritary
protection and elimination of their degradation for the serious dangers of
their irreparable destabilizing. Other information about the project.
