Summary: The vegetation succession was surveyed on two permanent plots ineastern Croatia in the period 1978-1991. One of these plotsstarted from an abandoned pasture, the other from arable land, with last culture of the wheat. Although they were geographicallyvery near each other, vegetation develops toward different woodcommunities on these plots, due to different ecologicalconditions on the habitat.

Summary: The taxon Papaver dubium L. subsp. lecoquii var. albiflorum Besser was not noted in Croatian flora till 1989, when it was found in northeastern Croatia, in Baranya region. In the 1993. specimens of the same taxon were found in eastern Slavonia, near Valpovo. Both findings were on dry, South exposed habitats, within the grassland and ruderal vegetation. Since the taxon is distributed in the nearby territory of Serbia it could be supposed to have spread from there.

Meeting: 8th Symposium EWRS "Quantitative approaches in weed and herbicide research and their practical application"
    Held: from 07/14/93 to 07/16/93
Summary: Floristic maps or phytocenological tables do not give the exactpicture of the abundance of weeds, nor do random investigationson restricted field area show the distribution and weedabundance. The new proposed method includes the areas of plantcommunities where the plant species is present, in addition tothe well known parameters, such as frequency and cover value.Index of abundance (Ia) expresses the relative share of everyspecies within the same type of vegetation or within the completeflora of investigated area. Determining the comprehensive limitsof Ia for each species one can plan both the protection ofendangered plants as well as the control of undesirable plants.

    Held: from 07/03/94 to 07/07/94
Summary: The Triassic dolomites are spread over the part of Gorski kotar region. Sporadically, the bare rocks are exposed on the surface, grey coloured and without fossils. On the other places, particularly over the flat habitats, dolines and carstic fields, there is thic layer of gravelly or loamy sediments deposited over the original Triassic dolomites. The leaching of soil takes places with regard to the soil depth, resulting in soil acidification. Since the investigations included the climatically homogeneous area, modified sporadically by exposition and slope, the differences in vegetation seems to be previously caused by soil depth.

    Held: from 10/03/94 to 10/07/94
Summary: In the tissues of vegetative buds of spruce proteins rich in basic amino-groups were situated in nuclei, in cell and nucleus membrane, but less in cytoplasm and cell wall. The amount of proteins was higher in the embryonic shoot than in the crown and cup-like structure. All parts of vevetative bud had the same electrophoretic picture of protein. Polypeptides with molecular mass 20 kDa existed in the tissue of Picea abies and it was missing in Picea omorica. Lipids were present in embryonic pith-cells and in loose-cells in the cup-like structure.

Summary: In the vegetative buds of Picea abies lipids were present in embryonic pith-cells and in loose-cells in the cup-like structure. There were almost no lipids in the crown cells. Proteins rich in basic amino-groups were situated in nuclei, in cell and nucleus membrane, but less in cytoplasm and cell wall. In the spring phase three zones of cells in embryonic shoot were prominent: dermal zone of small cells with big round nuclei, zone of larger vacuolated cells with slim nuclei in mid-cortex and some larger cells with big round nuclei in the middle of leaf primordia.

Summary: The phenology of the vine and weeds in vineyard was investigated throughout a vegetational season on the locality of Baranjsko Brdo (northeastern Croatia) with respect to the mechanical weed control. Paralelly, the soil temperature at different depths was measured once a week to determine the degree of thermophility of investigated species. Except the winter-earlyspring therophytes which develop leaves, flowers and fructificate at low temperatures, before the spring digging, the other species, in generall, do not finish their development cycle because of frequent digging.

Summary: Southernmost part of Istria represents the narrow tongue directing from the Premantura village to the southernmost point of the Istrian peninsula, Rt Kamenjak. The characteristics of eumediterrnean climate of the narrow coastal line of southern Istria is more emphasized there, in comparison with surrounding area, because that narrow peace of land is nearly completely surrounded by sea water. Although the eumediterranean vegetation is spread from Limski kanal along the coast to the Plomin bay, there are obvious some peculiarities of investigated area. The most recent investigations confirmed some new plant communities, as well as the new plant species in Croatian flora.

Summary: Qualitative and quantitative investigations were made within the row crops (vine, maize, sugar beet and vegetables) in spring aspect on the area of northeastern Slavonia. The greatest number of weed species was noted in vineyard, following by maize, and the least number in vegetables. This is connected with manner of cultivation and weed control. The most frequent weed species were: Echinochloa crus-galli, Galinsoga parviflora, Agropyron repens, Chenopodium album, Convolvulus arvensis, Veronica hederifolia and Ambrosia artemisiifolia.

Summary: The syntaxonomical position of pasture vegetation of Slavonia and Baranja was determined on the basis of 69 vegetational records. Different domestic animals graze there; horses, cows, sheep, pigs and geese. The largest areas of pastures belong to the ass. Trifolio-Agrostetum stoloniferae. Within these areas, with respect to the grazing intensity and habitat moisture there are other communities: Lolio-Plantaginetum majoris, Polygono-Bidentetum, Tanaceto-Artemisietum, Solidaginetum serotinae-canadensis, Caricetum ripariae and Phalaridetum arundinaceae. Some areas are used so intensively that only one species is dominant in floristic composition, in which case is impossible to determine the syntaxonomical position of such stand.

Title: Seasonal changes in constitution of vegetative buds of spruce
    Faculty: Prirodoslovno-matematički Zagreb
    Date of defense: 03/06/93
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 164
Summary: Three distinct stages of vegetative bud development were found tocorrespond to the phases of winter, early spring and spring.Rapid changes in morphology and constitution of the tissue ofvegetative bud of Picea abies happened in very short period withonset of spring (two weeks) contemporary with the significantincrease in mitotic activity and the enlargement of embryonictissue. The remarkable occurences were: lognified trachearycallous from sieve areas in the wall of the cup-like structure, diffusion of the pectic substances from the middle lamellae inthe wall of crown cells, the different distribution of nuclei andtheir different size in leaf primordia, multiplied increase ofmitotic index in the embryonic shoot, the increase of number andthe size of cells in the embryonic shoot, what indicated thegreat expansion of embryonic tissue in the vegetative bud. Alltogether confirmed the gusty reaction of embryonic andaccompanying tissues in the spring climate conditions. Thatgeneral mobilization of different substances in the tissue makesmanifestly favourable the application of various treatments toinduce alternative physiological reactions as the adventitiousbud induction or isolation of protoplasts and their dividing inculture, and makes them more successful in spring than in winter.

Summary: The recent investigations show that the flora of Mosor mountain consists of 968 plant taxa, 306 being new for Mosor mountain and two (Kickxia lanigera and Euphorbia sulcata) are new in Croatian flora. The most numerous taxa belong to the families Fabaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae and Lamiaceae. The plants belonging to the Mediterranean floric element are the most numerous, following by Southeuropean floric element. The share of Illyric-Mediterranean plants is considerable, mirroring the position of the Mosor mountain in the Eastmediterranean sector of Adriatic province of Mediterranean region. With respect to life form the most numerous are hemicryptophytes, followed by therophytes.
