Summary: Monitoring of eutrophication and other undesirable
phenomena (unusual phytoplankton blooms, near-anoxia in the bottom layer,
hypertrophic mucilaginous aggregates, blooms of some faunal species) was
continued during the period 1991-1995, with the aim to provide an early
warning for state and touristic agencies, and the public opinion. The
monitoring was based on parameters, measured with methods widely used in
oceanography, that characterize the main processes in the ecosystem: water
column stratification, horizontal water advection, nutrient cycles,
organic matter production and decomposition, biomass growth and activity
of the main planktonic fractions, phyto and zooplankton successions,
including a possible appearance of toxic or undesirable species for the
extant food chain. The obtained data were elaborated on PC and compared
with historical data (since 1966) from the Center for Marine Research
oceanographic data base. These implemented data series are also used to
investigate the mechanisms of long-term fluctuation in the northern
Adriatic ecosystem. Finally, these basic physical, chemical and biological
data are essential to characterize the oceanographic conditions, in which
researches of specific processes of the organic matter cycle were
performed.
Research goals: In the last decade undesirable effects of
eutrophication andother unusual phenomena on the northern Adriatic
ecosystem wereobserved with an increased frequency compared to the
seventies. These phenomena, as a result of serious ecological equilibrium
disturbances, negatively influenced some economic activities, like tourism
and fishery. For these reasons, monitoring activities should be continued
with the aim: 1) to provide an early warning and informations useful to
competent authorities related to the state in the sea and undesirable
phenomena, 2) to collect data useful for planning of possible protection
measures, 3) to collect data for studies of long-term changes in the
marine ecosystem, and 4) to collect complementary data needed in the
research of organic matter cycle in the northern Adriatic. The data
obtained during each cruise are compared with historical data (collected
since 1966 and stored in a oceanographic database) to establish possible
deviations of the observed oceanographic and biological actual
characteristics from a "mean" state. These analyses, as well as visual
observations in the water column, are used to try to forecast undesirable
phenomena (unusual phytoplankton blooms, hypertrophy of mucilaginous
aggregates, anoxia, possible contaminations of marine organism swith
phytoplankton toxins). Several preliminary technical reports and
informations can be prepared for national and international competent
organizations, touristic agencies, and the public opinion. The results
will be also published in the scientific literature.
