Summary: General revision of the classification of the brachyuran
crabs (Crustacea Decapoda Brachyura) in the form of a monograph. The
monograph will include a critical review of the present state of knowledge
of the classification of the taxon under study, re-description and
re-classification of the whole hierarchical system of higher taxa above
the generic level.
Research goals: The principal goal of the present research is to
elaborate a modern complete well explained classification of brachyuran
crabs in the form of a monograph corresponding to the state of knowledge
at the end of this century. Namely, the last complete monograph appeared
in 1957, and up to now a considerable progress in knowledge of the taxon
has occured. But, the data were not critically interpreted and synthetized
in a consistent phylogenetic system. The present research aims to classify
properly all the known higher taxa above the generic level into a modern
phylogenetic system and in such a way all lacunae will be fullfiled and
inconsistencies corrected. It is expected that the monograph will be in
concordance with modern trends in the phylogenetic systematics and that
all taxa will be properly established, diagnosed, described using a wider
range of systematic characters, named according to the Rules of the
zoological nomenclature (In: International Code of Zoological
Nomenclature) and properly ranked and arranged (ordered) in the
hierarchical classificatory scheme. As such this research will resolve
some old questions and pose new ones so that it will be useful for the
progress of the study of the brachyuran systematics. Other information about the project.
