Summary: Some changes have been found long-term monitoring of physical, chemical and biological parameters in front of the largestharbours of the eastern Adriatic coast. This paper presents somerecent results about copepods - dominant mesozooplankton group -as they respond very quickly (both by composition and biomass) tothe changes of the environment they inhabit. Besides theincreased copepod density, further increasing of maximum valuesof Acartia clausi was found at the whole investigated area in1987 and 1988, caused by progressive eutrophication of theeastern Adriatic coastal waters.

Summary: Solar radiation was the major factor controlling the survival offaecal coliforms (FC) in seawater. The responses of FC survivalto intesity of solar radiation, temperature and salinity wereinversely proportional. Variations in solar radiation had moreeffect than variations in temperature in bringing about changesof T90 for FC. Synergistically effects of solar radiation withtemperature and salinity were established.

Summary: Copepods, the dominant group of net zooplankton organisms, werestudied in teh areas exposed to the pollution of agricultural, domestic and industrial effluents in the 1976-2988 period.Relatively small depth at studied stations and the strong impactof human activities have caused some changes of the environmentreflected upon composition, density and seasonal oscillations ofcopepod biomass. The recent results from the coastal sea ofthe eastern Adriatic have shown progrssive changes under theinfluence of eutrophicatin, such as an increase trend ofAcartia clausi percentages and iincreasing copepod biomass. Inthe vela Luka bay (channel region) the eutrophication effectof human activities can be seen in the upper part of the baythrough unexpectedly high biomass. No changes have yet beenrecorded from the open middle Adriatic. All these changes can beclearly related to progrssive eutrophication of the easternAdriatic coastal waters and increasing phytoplnkton density.

Summary: Biomass and production of bacteria and heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) as well as grazing on bacteria were measured seasonally in Kaštela Bay (Adriatic Sea). Strong seasonality of all studied parameters was established with maximum values obtained during the warmer summer-autumn period. In that period bacteria showed a twofold higher production while HNF showed a threefold higher biomass and ninefold higher production thenduring colder winter-spring period. These results suggest that during the summer-autumn period in kaštela Bay, bacteria could be an important link between primary production and higher trophic levels.

Summary: Pollution effects on the bacteriological qulity of Mitillus galloprovincialis was studied at nine stations in the coastal area of Split through the period 1984-93. Recorded number of faecal coliforms in mussels was well correlated with the pollution of marine environment. Their numbers exceeded maximum permissible limit, frequently reaching extrmely high values, throughout the studied area. This points to the fact consumption of mussels from the Split area may cause serious risks from human health from the hygienic-epidemiological point of view.

Summary: Correlation between bacterial and HNF abundance was not established across the year, probably as a result of predator-prey oscillations, and compex interractions with numerous feedbacks. The ratio between bacterial and HNF abundance ranged between 148 and 5225 with mean value of 1568, or expressed as carbon biomass ratio the mean value was 4.1. Both bacteial and HNF production were in maximum during summer and therefore, high corelation between them was established pointing at strong trophic relationship between these two groups of organisms. Expressed as carbon biomass HNF production accounted on average 39% of bacterial production.

Summary: Separate and combined effects of solar radiation, temperature and salinity on the survival of faecal pollution indicators were studied in situ in KaŠtela Bay. The responses of survival of indicators to all studied environmental factors were inversely proportional. Solar radiation was the major factor controlling the survival of pollution indicators. The increase of temeperature and salinity was more detrimental to indicators survival in the presence of sunlight suggesting that solar radiation may have acted synergistically with temperature or salinity.

The list includes 352 specific and infraspecific taxa of algae (Rhdophyta 225 taxa or 63.9 %, Phaeophyta 75 taxa or 21.3 %, Chlorophyta 52 taxa or 14.8 %) and 3 species od seagrasses, of which 255 are reported from the archipelago for the first time. The R/P ratio of 3 indicates a subtropical flora. The flora is analyzed in terms of its phytogeographical components.

Summary: The paper analyses the selectivity of the basic formula of the method harmonic analysis of the tides considering the lenght of the sea-level time-series. It is demonstrated that the method for sufficiently long time-series eliminates the error resulting from sea-air interaction. In the discussion the sufficient condition is given to consider a stochastic signal resulting from sea-air interaction as a continuous stationary stochastic process in the sea-level time-series.

Summary: The earliest closure model for hydrodynamic equtions is that proposed by Prandtl (1925). Modern theory of turbulence has demonstrated that this eqution can be obtained from a balance of shear production, buoyancy productionand dissipation in the turbulent enrgy equation. These results are reviewed and discussed. Some peculiarities when applying the results of observations from the atmospheric boundary layer to the sea are discussed.

During summer 1989, like in1988, large quantities of organic substances and mucouseaggregetions were recorded along the coast of northern and middleAdriatic. Vertical stratification of sea water was nominated asprincipal cause of bloom. The low horizontal movement retainednutrients in the area that extends from the Po Delta, and thenutrients could not be exported and remained to be biologicallyused and recycled.

Summary: Time series (>20 years) of bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, zooplankton and primary production in the Adriatic Sea were analyzed. Increasing long-term trends were established for all studied parameters, at both coastal and open sea areas, presumably as a result of eutrophication process. In the opes sea the natural factors (water exchange between the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea, and temperature) were dominant in controlling year-to-year fluctuations of plankton. On the other hand, long-term fluctuations of plankton in the coastal area were more controlled by man-iduced factors. Thus, besides natural factors (temperature, local meteorological conditions), the dominant pattern of planctonic fluctuation was corellated with fluctuation of nutrients coming from the land as a result of man's activities.

Summary: The effect of waste waters of Split town port on the changes inthe structure of surface phitobenthic settlements were studied at5 permanent stations in spring and summer. A total of 131 taxa ofbenthic algae (Rhodophyta 67, Phaeophyta 32 and Chlorophyta 32)were determined from all the stations and both seasons (124 taxafrom spring and 104 taxa from summer). The number of species atthe town port stations (1 and 2) was very small (24 and 21) andthe Phaeophyta group species were completely absent. The highestnumber of species (82 and 97) was at the station 4 and 5 ( thegreatest distinct from town port) and the Phaeophyta groupspecies were determined.

    Held: from 06/28/95 to 06/30/95
Summary: A check list of marine benthic flora of Palgruža Isle in open Middle Adriatic was compiled on personal collections and sparse bibliographic data. The list includes 295 specific and infraspecific taxa of algae (Rhodophyta 197 taxa or 66.8 %, Phaeophyta 65 taxa or 22 %, Chlorophyta 33 taxa or 11.2 %) and one secies of seagrass (Posidonia oceanica). The R/P ratio of 3 indicate a warm temperate flora. The analyses were carried out of the phytogeography of all identified taxa of studied flora, dominated by Atlanto-Mediterranean floral elements.

Summary: The paper presents the results of studies the composition, structure and seasonal and depth distributions of epiphytic flora and vegetation on the leaves and rhizomes of Posidonia oceanica in the middle Adriatic (Split, islands Brač, Hvar, Vis) between 1984 and 1987. The epiphytic flora were discused by number and percentage of Rhodophyta, Phaeophyta and Chlorophyta. Epiphytic vegetation were analized by mean total coverage of samples, quantitative dominance and qualitative dominancea of ecological supergroups (Phsl, Ssl, RMsl, ETNsl) and groups (HP,ISR,D), and by mean total coverage of individual epiphytic taxa and their level of presence. At the end is give the composition of "basic" epiphytic vegetation developed on posidonia leaves and rhizomes in the middle Adriatic.
