Summary: Juvenile gilthead sea bream (S.aurata L.) were fed
commercialdiets with 150, 500 and 1 000 mg of vitamin C per kg of basal
diet. One group was was kept in starvation. The experiment lasted98 days.
The total and L-ascorbic acid levels were found to be
highest in the brain, kidney, liver, gills and white muscle atthe beginning
of the experiment. Ascorbic acid concentrations in
brain, gills, liver and white muscle showed no significant
differences due to the different dietary treatments, whereas the
diets in the kidney ignificantly affected total ascorbic acid
level in the kidney. Sampling time and different diets did not
affect the concentrations of the total and L-ascorbic acid inthe gills and
white muscle, or the total ascorbic acid levels inthe kidney which does not
hold for the brain and liver.
Keywords: ascorbic acid, dietary treatment, organs, Sparus aurata,L.

L-ascorbic acid in the organs of juvenile sea bream

Summary: Juvenile gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata, L.) were
kept
under starvation for 98 days. Starvation resulted in growth
inhibition, and significant decline in weight, condition
coefficient and hepatosomatic index, which were also due to the
time of sampling. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealedthat the
most part of variance accounts for the changes in the
brain, liver and white muscle total and L-ascorbic acid levels
which coincide in time and are negatively correlated with thegill and
kidney total and L-ascorbic acid levels. It has alsobeen shown by the
method of principal components that starvation
appears to affect ascorbic acid content in juvenile gilthead sea
bream from 26th day on.

Summary: Embryonic and yolk-sac larval development of laboratorz
spawned common dentex is described and illustrated. The ripe egg of D.
Dentex is a typical sparid egg with mean diameter 958 um. The incubation
period was 81 h at 17 0C. Newlyhatched yolk-sac larvae were 2170um in total
length. Some morfological characteristics which may be useful for
identification are described and compared with some other sparid yolk-sac
larvae. The distance of the wide pigment spot in the middle of the tail
from the anterior tip of the body was about 1680um in newly hatched
yolk-sac larvae, and about 2365um 48h after hatching. Three days after
hatching this distance was more than twice the oil globule diameter. The
distance of the terminal section of the gut could be a reliable parametar
for distinguishing dentex larvae from other sparid yolk-sac larvae in
ichtioplankton studies.

Summary: Acute toxicity of ammonia to juvenile sea bass at three
aeration levels of test tanks is expressed as median lethal time. Two
statistically significant components were distinguished by principal
component analyses between the chemical parameters and their interactions
in each tank. The first PC describes the phase properies of pH, oxygen
concentration and NH3. The second PC describes the toxicity due to the
dissociation of added NH4Cl to experimental tanks. It is negatively
correlated with the second PC whereas the correlation with the first is
negative and considerably poorer.

Summary: Effects of temperature, photoperiod and delayed feeding on
the larval developtment and swimbladder inflation in sea bass were
studied.Exposure to darkness during incubation and early post-larval
developtment resulted in better survival at all tested temperatures and had
no effect on swimbladder inflation.Exposure of fish to darkness during
incubation feeding on Artemia nauplii may be delayed for 72 hours producing
no harmful consequences in the later development.

Summary: Striped sea bream Lithognathus mormyrus,L. are
hermaphroditic protandrus fish. Sex rations are given for length and age
classes, indicating the males change sex mainly at length between 25.0 and
32,5 cm, in age classes 4 and 7 . Length-weight relationship showed no
significant difference from isometric growth in winter and negative
allometric growth in summer. The age composition was established using the
Bhattacharya method and additional observations of annual rings on scales.
