Summary: In mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis tissue-specificelectrophoretic patterns of multiple molecular forms of esterasewere observed. Carboxylesterase and acetylesterase wereidentified following the application or pertinent substrates andinhibitors. Hepatopancreas was the richest source of esteraseactivity followed by gills, ovaria, adductor muscle aand mantle. In vitro studies indicated that organophosphate and carbamateinsecticides have distinct effects on different esteraseisozymes. Esterase classified as carboxylesterase were moresensitive to parathion and particularly to paraoxon.
Keywords: Mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, esterase, carboxylesterase, acetylesterase, hepatopancreas, organophosphate pesticides, carbamate pesticidese.

Summary: Searching for confident methods to assess the impaired metabolismand biochemistry in fish exposed to toxic substances, we verifiedthe significance of aminotransferase activity in mullet plasma(GOT and GPT) as indicators of liver intoxication. We havecurrently confirmed that the increased activity of SDH and GLDHand the enhanced concentration of tryglicerides in plasma can bealso used as indicators of hepatotoxicity induced by carbontetrachloride and phenol.

Summary: Following the chromatographic separation of the grey mullet red muscle extract, two fractions with aspartate aminotransferase activity were detected. One of the anticipated enzymes was purified to homogeneity. The isolated enzyme was a dimeric protein composed of identical subunits with the overall Mr of about 65000. It consisted of three electrophoretically distinct subforms with isoelectric points at pH 8.50, 8.70 and 8.85 respectively. According to its subcellular distribution, susceptibility to inhibitors, molecular and catalytic properties the isolated enzyme belonged to the mitochondrial form of aspartate aminotransferase.
Keywords: Aspartate aminotransferase, Mitochondrion, Enzyme purification, Enzyme characterization
