Summary: Nutrients, chlorophyll a, primary production (C-14), andstandard oceanographic parameters were measured seasonally from1983-1988 along the axis the Krka River estuary. Because ofanthropogenic discharges, surface layer orthophosphateconcentrations (up to 1.7 mmol m-3), phytoplankton biomass(chlorophyll a up to 23 mg m-3) and primary production (up to 108mgC m-3 h-1) were significantly higher in Šibenik Bay comparedwith other estuarine subregions.

Summary: A station in the northern Adriatic Sea has been sampled seven times between Dec 1988 and Nov 1989. The majority of benthic foraminifera live in the topmost centimeter of the sediment. Most taxa occur through the top seven centimeters of the sediment column; taxa living exclusively within the sediment were not found. A simple bipartition between epifaunal and infaunal taxa is inadequate to describe foraminiferal microhabitat preferences.

Summary: In October 1989 the distribution of benthic foraminifera in theuppermost seven centimetres of the sediment has been determinedin 14 sample stations in the northern Adriatic Sea. The downwardorganic flux, which controls the complex relation between foodand oxygen availability in the benthic environment, appears tobe the main factor determining the distribution of benthicforaminifera. In most bottom environments especially the oxygenconcentration is limiting benthic life.

Summary: The annual cycle of sedimentation in the northern Adriatic isdescribed from data collected over 1 year with multisamplesediment traps. Settling matter was collected from 2 depths (25and 35 m) in a 37 m water column at 15-30 day intervals.Considerable differences in the quantities collected were noted.Resuspended sediment and primary settling matter (phytoplanktoncells, detritus) were the main contributors to the particulateflux measured by the traps.

Summary: Fatty acid and hydrocarbons of sedimenting particles wereinvestigated in the northeastern Adriatic sea from November1988 to December 1989. The differences in composition, concentration and fluxes of the fatty acid and hydrocarbons wererelated to the soucers of sediment in material reflecting theinfluence of resuspension of bottom sediment during winter andappearance of mucus aggregates during summer and subsequentdeposition in autu mn.

Summary: The vertical distribution of benthic foraminifera in a sediment core in front of the Po delta has been studied in detail. The studied core spans the past 160 years and can provide an extremely detailed record of the youngest history of the northern Adriatic. Changes in the foraminiferal pattern and sediment grain size about 1840-1880 can be attributed to man-induced changes in the main outflow canals of the Po river. The foraminiferal associations indicate a steadily increasing nutrient load from 1900 onwards, a s the effect of anthropogenic eutrophication, markedly intensified around 1930. More intense and prolonged anoxia started about 10 year ago.
