Summary: In the investigation period 1991-1995 the influence of the
long-term oceanographic and hydrologic changes on nutrient and primary
production cycles in the northern Adriatic were studied. Concurrently,
particulate matter production and sedimentation, as well as the role of
pico and nano auto and heterotrophic plankton in the total organic
production were investigated. These processes are relatively important in
shallow marine regions, but they are not yet sufficiently known in the
northern Adriatic. A better understanding of these processes is essential
for a proper interpretation of seasonal and long-term changes in the
organic matter cycle. Methods widely used in marine sciences were adopted
and data were elaborated after storage in an oceanographic and biological
data bank.
Research goals: A long-term research of the biogeochemical
mechanisms that dominate in the northern Adriatic ecosystem was continued
in the proposed investigations, with two complementary aims: 1) Mechanism
description of long-term changes in the main processes of the organic
matter cycle (from temporal data series of various parameters collected
since 1966); 2) Investigation of mechanisms and processes relevant to the
organic matter cycle that are not yet sufficiently known in the northern
Adriatic (the role of pico and nano auto and heterotrophs in the plankton
communities; production, origin and sedimentation of particulate matter;
cycle of the biogenic silica). The achieved results represent a
significant contribution for the elaboration of an operative ecological
model, as an instrument for a rational managing and protection of the
region. The collected data can be also used in comparative studies between
the northern Adriatic and other similar coastal ecosystems. The results
will be published in national and international scientific journals,
presented in scientific meetings, and used for the elaboration of various
Ph.D. and M.S. theses.
