Summary: During 1988 and 1989 unusual oceanographic properties were
observed in the northern Adriatic Sea. Very high temperature
(28.8řC) and low salinity (26.2) in the surface layer, and high
bottom salinity (38.9) contributed to extreme stability of the
water column. In this conditions the bottom layer was
undersaturated with oxygen below the usual levels already from
March. Oxygen gradually decreased down to anoxia, which was
observed in the second part of November.

Summary: During the summers of 1988 and 1989 high quantities
ofgelatinous aggregates (up to 3m) were formed in the northernAdriatic. In
that period AOU-orthophosphate or total inorganicnitrogen concentration
ratios were higher than the averagevalues calculated for the period
1972-1981. During the falls ofboth years marked hypoxic conditions occurred
in the bottomlayer, where the AOU-PO4 ratios were lower and AOU-TN
ratioshigher than usual.

Summary: Due to unusually long periods of dry weather, river
discharge
rates, and consequentely nutrient inputs to the sea, were
significantly reduced during 1988-1990 compared to a precedent
period. Calm and clear weather increased phytoplankton
photosynthetic activity, which, due to nutrient depletion,
probably excreted mucus. Diatoms might have an important role in
this process, since their densities during late spring andsummer were
unusually high.
