Summary: The ability of mammalian neural retina differentiation was tested in five experimental systems. The survival of fetal retina is the best in eyeball grafted under the kidney capsule. Only fetal retina survived in renal grafts. Survival of the fetal retina in vitro is equally possible in simple MEM without proteins as well as in serum or transferrin supplemented medium during the period of 14 days. Transdifferentiation from fetal retina cells to lens cells occured in cultures of dissociated cells of human embryo retina.

Summary: 5-azacytidine enhanced the differentiation of myotubes and cartillage in comparison to control if added only once during the culture period. The differentiation of neuroblasts as well as other tissues was impeded if 5-azacytidine was applied during first five days of culture. The demethylating agens 5-azacytidine acted antimitotically and citotoxically on rat embryos cultured in vitro during 14 days.

Summary: The expression of Rb protein in SCID mouse embryos and human embryos was studied at the single cell level by immunofluorescence. The difference in expression of Rb protein, dependent of the cell type and the degree of differentiation was discovered. Eg. in mouse Rb was present in differentiated squamous epithelial cells, but it was absent from the basal cell layers. In retina the expression was also dependent of the degree of differentiation. The highest level of expression was found in megakaryocytis, hemopoetic islands and sceletal muscle. In human embryos no expression was found in retina.

Summary: This review and synthesis brings to attention and arouses medical awareness in the neuroteratogenic potential of the sea food contaminant and sea pollutant - methylmercury. It summarizes the chronology of events during the well-documented toxic episode in the Bay of Minamata, contemporary understanding of some of the known toxic and teratogenic mechanisms of Minamata Disease, and its occurence in the Mediterranean Sea water. Ecological processes and trends in the Adriatic Sea will be evaluated as the substrate for the potential threat from methylmercury build-up in the sea to human health in the Adriatic region. The child's right to life and right to health was denied in Minamata Bay under circumstances when its, and its mother's right of life in a healthy enviroment was abused by organic mercury pollution of the sea.

Summary: Rat egg cylinders at the primitive streak stage were grown in modified organ culture for 2 weeks using a chemically-difined medium. The purpose of the experiment was to determine whether the terminal tissue differentiation is modified by human transferrin. The control sets were grown in medium with or without rat serum. In explants treated with transferrin, groups of atypical cells of the ocular lens (lentoids) appeared more frequently than in both control sets; however neuroblasts were observed as often as in the serum-supplemented medium. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) stimulated the differentiation of neuroblasts but did not promote lentoid formation. We conclude that human transferrin does stimulate the differentiation of lentoids in rat embryonic explants, but the mechanism of its action remains unknown.

Summary: Permaculture is a word coined by its founder, the forester Bill Mollison, and is composed of PERMAnent agriCULTURE. Permaculture represents the design system which is the alternative to the present day agriculture. It is inspired by the ecosystems, the natural communities of plants and animals, as best represented in forests. It is about desingning the food producing ecosystems based on the polyculture design, as opposed to the presently accepted monoculture technologies. The goal is to use the power of the human brain in designing the landscape and crops as to minimize the needs for human work and energy from oil derivatives. The ethics of permaculture can best be summarized in terms of the following three entities: Earth care, People care and Fair shares. Earth care is about enlightened interest for our own survival, for preservation of the remaining wilderness and biodiversity on Eart, as the life support system crucial for human survival. People care is about search for intelligent creation in designing cities for real human needs. The Fair shares that we are entitled to are necessary because the Earth has its limits. We have to learn to adjust our consumption according to our needs, and not according to our greed. We have to learn to leave survival space for other species, enough food and natural resources for the poor people of the world and unpolluted Earth for the future generations. We have to learn fast to use only our fair shares.

Summary: Origin and destiny of all the cells which are generated presently are closely related to cell division. All the cells are generated by division of their progenitor cells, and concequently they will cease to exist as entities in the moment of their division into the daughter cells. The cell cycle describes the temporal sequence of events, changes, control, and regulatory mechanisms, which bring about, for example, a birth of a new human being. The cell cycle, however, when out of control of the known regulatroy mechanisms of intercellular communications, can endanger the life of this very individual by the frequent divisions leading to malignant transformation. The cell cycle is under regulation in embryonic cells, as well as in the adult ones, by the wide array of protein factors. A series of these proteins is already described, and their role is partially understood, as well as their malfunctions which cause malignant growth.

Of all the human activities which are harmful for the enviroment, war is the worst of all. This unbeliveable war we have been exposed to, paid in Croatia no respect for children, women or refugees; schools, hospitals or churches. It does not care for the Earth and knows nothing about sustainable living. It paid no respect to the World Heritage Sites in Croatia either. Held: from 01/25/92 to 02/08/92
Summary: The expression pattera of the retinoblastoma (Rb) protein has been studied at the single cell level in frozen sections of 16-18 days old SCID mouse fetuses by immunoflourescence staining with mouse monoclonal and rabbit polyclonal antibodics, using conventional epifluorescence and confocal laser scanning microscopy. The nuclei of megakaryocytes, hemopoetic islands of the fetal liver, osteo- amelo- and odontoblasts, and skeletal muscle were strongly stained. There was no detectable Rb in the basal cell layers of stratified squamous epithelia, but the differentiating, more superficial layers were positive. In the retina Rb protein was detectable in the inner ganglion layer but not in the outer neuroblastic layer. In the central nervous system the Rb was expressed in neurons and glia cells as well. The nuclei in the collecting tubules of the kidney, in the pancreas and the adrenal cortex showed positive staining. Analysis of the differentiation dependent expression of the Rb protein in relation to the prospective life cycle of the cells in which it appears may pave the way towards an understanding of the strictly tissue specific oncogenic effect of Rb loss in families with hereditary retinoblastoma.

Summary: Growth in serum-free culture of postimplantation rat embryos is absent, but after 14 days of cultivation the differentiation of epidermis and cartilage occures. The addition of retinoic acid to a serum-free medium causes the methaplasia of squamos to cylindrical epithelium more obviously than in serum-supplemented medium. The addition of transferin promotes the differentiation of lentoids. From these results we conclude that our serum-free system has proved to be very good model for investigation of various specific differentiation factors.

Summary: The ability of mammalian neural retina differentiation was tested in five experimental systems. The survival of fetal retina is the best in eyeball grafted under the kidney capsule. Only fetal retina survived in renal grafts. Survival of the fetal retina in vitro is equally possible in simple MEM without proteins as well is serum or transferrin supplemented medium during the period of 14 days. Transdifferentiation from fetal retina cells to lens cell occured in cultures of dissociated cells of human embryo retina.

Summary: Changes in glycoprotein and ganglioside composition in human trophoblasts (8th week of gestation) after in vitro exposure to pulsed Doppler ultrasound (pulse duration 1.22 us; repetition frequency 11.1 KHz; center fequency 4 MHz; ISPPA=175.5 W/cm2; ISPTA=0.59 W/cm2) were investigated. Evacuated trophoblasts were divided in two halves and isonated for 10 min on top of a 6 cm layer of 5% gelatin in 50 ml tubes (Falcon) at 37 C. One half of each trophoblast was sham insonated and served as an internal control. After insonation trophoblasts were maintained at 37 C for 24 h. Glycoproteins were detected using alfa-D-mannose specific lectins from Galanthus nivalis and Narcissus pseudonarcissus. A decrease in the expression of mannose containing glycoprotein mgp47 and an increase in expression of mgp54 were observed. Ganglioside composition was also significantly altered. Concentrations of two gangliosides migrating similarly to GM2, and one similarly to concentrations of one ganglioside migrating similarly to GM3, and two other undentified gangliosedes increased two-to fourfold.

Summary: On the basis of theoretical consideration (Gally et al., 1990), it has been proposed that nitric oxide (NO) is a spatial signal necessary for the formation and activity-dependent refinement of connections in the developing brain. Therefore, we have analysed spatio-temporal distribution and morphology of nitric oxide synthase histo-reactive (NOS hr) neurons in the developing rat forebrain. We have used NADPH diaphorase histochemistry as a simple method for localization of NOS. The first individual NOS hr neurons appeared relatively early between embryonic day 13 and 14 and were confined to the ventro-lateral aspect of incipient corpus stratum and cortical preplate. Later, after appearance of the cortical plate NOS hr were located in the marginal and subplate zones. Further during development, NOS hr neuron invaded progessively the cortical plate in rostro-caudal and latero-medial directions. The adult cortical pattern was established at the end of the first postnatal week with neurons scattered in layers II-VI and in the subcortical white matter. These data suggests a possible role for NO during the rat forebrain development.

Summary: 5-azacytidine enhanced the differentiation of myotubes and cartillage in comparison to control if added only once during the culture period. The differentiation of neuroblasts as well as other tissues was impeded if 5-azacytidine was applied during first five days of culture. The demethylating agens 5-azacytidine acted antimitotically on rat embryos cultured in vitro durign 14 days.

Summary: 9-day old rat embryos grow during 14 days of culture in a serum-supplemented medium, but do not grow in pure serum-free medium. Optimal growth as in serum-supplemented medium, cannot be achived neither with the same protein concentration as in serum, nor by random combination of growth stimulators (transferrin and albumine). When a cytostatic 5-azacytidine was added only once to serum-free medium with transferrin, an immediate reduction of growth was observed. Neural growth factor impaired growth in both serum-free or serum-supplemented medium.

Summary: The Velebit Mountain is the most important mountain area in Croatia, stretching along the Adriatic coastline in the length of 145 km, and varying in width from 10 to 30 km in the coastal hinterland. It represents the multi layered natural reource of national and international importance presenting numerous acute challenges and potentials. In 1978 it was registered as Biosphere Reserve within the UNESCO Man and Biosphere programme and in 1981 the whole of Velebit Mountain was proclaimed a Nature Park. The attempts to establish it as a National Park, date as far back as 1929 (Stirovaca), but so far only Paklenica has attained this level of protection in the South Velebit. In spite of the most recent attempts to proclaim the whole high altitude area of Velebit a National Park, it seems more realistic to establish the North Velebit National Park.

Summary: We have identified a novel Ems/D11-like homeobox gene that is ecpressed both during gastsrulation and later during organogenesis in the developing limb buds. The early expression is localized specifically to Hensen's node and to the developing notochord in a manner that sugests potential roles for this gene in the determination of the primary emryonic axis, and in regulating the remporal progression of somitogenesis. The pattern of late ecpression of this gene, which is restricted to the limb buds, is suggestive of a role in determining positional identity along the proximo-distal axis of the limb. The identification of other developmental control genes (eg. Goosecoid) that have a similar bimodal ecpression pattern in the vertebrate embryo suggests the conservation of a regulatory network that governs both of these developmental processes.

Summary: 8 and 9-day old rat embryos were cultivated in a serum-free and serum-supplemented medium according to a modified organ culture method. 5-azacytidine incorporated in DNA prevents the methylation of cytosine which results in gene activation was added to the medium. The grwth of ecplants was not influenced when 5-azacytidine was applied during 24 hours, but when added for 5 days continiously the growth was significantly impeded. 9 day old embryos cultivated in a serum-supplemented medium showed significantly better differentiation of myotubes, cartilage and neural tissue. 8-days old embryos lackin mesoderm in the moment of explanation give rise to mesodermal tissues rarely, with 5-azacytidine myotubes, cartilage and neural tissue differentiated more often. In a serum-free medium survival of explants was significantly lower especially with highest doses of 5-azacytidine. The differentiation was not so good as in controls, and with the highest dose explants did not develop any gut epithelium, cartilage and myotubes.

Summary: In the year 1989 Mr. Denis Hayes initiated from the Stanford University, California, a massive international manifestation on the occassion of the 20th anniversary of the first Eart Day manifestation in 1970, with the goal to mobilize the world attention towards ecological problems, sustainable development and conservation of the human enironment. Croatian Biological Society being invited for colaboration from Mr. Denis Hayes accepted the invitation and sent back the first response to California the names and addresses of a number of Croatian intellectuals, prominent in their efforts for the wellbeing of man and human enviroment. It was suggested that they should be approached directly from California with the invitation to organize manifestations for the Earth Day 1990, and to announce in this way the beginning of the decade dedicated to this goal: 1990 - 2000.

    Authors:
    Phillips, Adrian
Ordering party: IUCN - The World Conservation Union
    Year: 1994
    Number of pages: 150
    Language: engleski
Summary: The aim of Parks for Life is to ensure an adequate, effective and well-managed network of protected areas in Europe - to conserve the full landscape and biological diversity of the continent. The plan sets out the policies and the actions needed to achieve this. Europe has many impressive protected areas, but the network still has deficiencies and gaps. There is much to be done, but also there are many opportunities. The next World Parks Congress will provide a good point to review progress in achieving the aims of the plan. What would an adequatte, effective and well-managed network of protected areas look like in 2002?
