Summary: In this project fauna, taxonomy and biology of the Mammals, Reptiles and Coleoptera of the Croatia and Balkan peninsula are investigated, particulary those taxons which are not well known till today. Among Mammals purely known Chiropteran species (Chiroptera), particulary in Panonian plain are investigated, and also in forest ecosystems. Distribution and taxonomy of the genus Mus and Muscardinus are investigated. The processes of dispersion of the species Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus flavicollis are investigated. Among Reptiles we investigate distribution, taxonomic status and biology of the wall lizard (Podarcis muralis), and same for the relict and endemic species of the genus Archaeolacerta. Entomological research consist of investigation of habitat selection and composition of Coleopterean fauna in the habitats of Gorski Kotar region. Results should be original contributions to the knowledge of named taxons, their faunistic, taxonomic, biological and ecological value in some parts of Croatia.

Research goals: The aim of the proposed work is to make a detailed investigationof the distribution, taxonomical status and other aspects ofbiology in Croatian poorly investigated taxons of mammals andreptiles. Also examined was the fauna and the structure ofhabitats of beetles (Coleoptera) in the upper part of Croatiawith the distribution of species by habitats. The results ofthese investigations will contribute to the knowledge of faunaand biology of the mentioned groups of animals in the areas oftheir range in Croatia, as well as to contribute to solving theproblem of taxonomy of species from the genus of Mus and thespecies Muscardinus avellanarius and Podarcis muralis, and thestatus of the subgenus Archaeoloacerta with the species Lacertaoxycephala and Lacerta horvathi. We expect to contribute to theknowledge of the dispersion process in populations of dominantspecies of forest rodents (Apodemus flavicollis) as an additionto intensive investigations of population dynamics and simpatricspeciation of small mammals which are implemented throughout theworld.
