Summary: The Republic of Croatia by its geographical,
geological, geomorphological, climatic, ethnographic and other
characteristics occupies a great variety of regions in the southern part of
Europe. The said characteristics are manifested by a large number of plant
species but also, and that is very important either, by an extraordinary
polymorphism of many autochtonous species. That explains to a great extent
the still deficient knowledge of this valuable vegetal genofund, rich in
many so far unsufficiently researched and, consequently, scientifically
still unrecognized endemic plants. This project includes in the first
place the taxonomic studies of these so-called "widely understood" (sensu
lato) species, within numerous endemic plants of our region are met.
The total flora of particular parts of Croatia differs also considerably
from one part to another and, therefore, it is necessary to make researches
that will show us the same time, the general distribution of individual
species having a wide or, quite often, a very limited habitat. Such
researches include the preparation of floristic maps, too. An important
place in the floral composition of Croatia is occupied by adventive plants.
Monitoring of the direction and intensity of their spreading, as well as
the appearance of completely new adventive species is also included in this
project.
Keywords: Flora, Endems, Adventiv plants, Croatia
Research goals: The floristic and taxonomic researches generally
last over a long period of time, so the researches included in and planned
by the work which makes part of this project are the continuation of the
earlier ones and the basis for those to be carried out in the future. The
objectives of the work is to continue the researches already started and to
achieve the results in conformity with the possibilities of the work. The
folllowing researches are presently in course: a) the researches of the so
far floristical unsufficiently investigated regions of Croatia (parts of
Istra, Kozjak over Split, the island of Murter, parts of Međimurje); b)
the comparative researches of polymorphous genera (Iris, Festuca,
Thalictrum, Centaurea) with the aim to explain better the taxonomic status
of some of their endemic forms; c) the taxonomic researches of the endemic
Dalmatia pine (Pinus dalmatica Vis.); d) the distribution of the south
European spesies Ostrya carpinifolia Scop. in the territory of Croatia.
The results of the above metioned and other similar researches will serve
to get better knowledge of total vegetal fund of Croatia which could be
used in phytocoenological researches important for forest management,
agriculture and cattle-breeding, as well as for protecting imperilled
vegetal species and regions (such as coastal and mountaneous regions
imperilled by the intesive tourism). The knowledge of autochtonous species
genoms is also a prerequisite for large number of future genetic researches
concerning the production of food for people and cattle. Other information about the project.
