Title: Consequences of Long-Lasting Asbestos Exposure: Peripheral Blood Parameters in Shipyard Workers With and Without Asbestosis

Authors:
Trošić, Ivančica (50540)

Journal: Experimental and Toxicologic Pathology
Number: 2-3

Summary: The purpose of this study was to identify and compare the peripheral blood alterations that occur in workers exposed to asbestos dust ,with and withouth asbestosis. The results of an extensive retrospective investigation showed an increase in the serum levels of IgM, IgA and IgE immunoglobulins. The increase detected in the serum immunoglobulin levels could be consequence of asbestos related pathological processes in the lung, which result in asbestotic fibrosis. The higher immunoglobulin levels in the peripheral circulation of asbestotic cases could be areflection of asbestos-induced pathological processes taking place in the lungs, locally stimulating humoral immunity. Local stimulation of the immune system could be, also, due to the appearance of a new asbestos exposure evoked antigen. The haemato-immunological findings are useful for screening selected population at risk of developing asbestosis.

Title: Macrophage Phagocytic Activity and Cell Phagocytic Capacity Following Intratracheal Instillation of a Comixture of Asbestos Fibers

Summary: By examin lung phagocyte functionality following exposure to inert particles and asbestos fibers comixture, the insight into the alveolar space clearance efficiency was assessed in the host defense against invading respirable factors.Alveolar macrophage phagocytic activity defined by the number of macrophages capable of phagocytizing or taking up the particles, and phagocytic capacity, i.e. the number of particles taken up per cell, were obtained by microscopic cytological analyses. The results obtained confirm the postponed alveolar macrophage quantity response, as well as macrophage quality inhibition of asbestos comixture instilled animals. These findings indicate the toxic effect of asbestos already at the alveolar cell level.

Title: Potential Genotoxic Risk Related to Simultaneous Exposure to Radionuclides and Cytostatics

Authors:
Brumen, Vlatka (119715)
Horvat, Đurđa (16303)
Trošić, Ivančica (50540)
Journal: American Journal of Industrial Medicine
Number: 6
ISSN: 0271-3586
Volume: 27
Year: 1995
Pages: from 871 to 876
Number of references: 16
Language: engleski
Summary: The problem of mixed exposures, i. e. simultaneous exposure to various sorts and types of agents is not uncommon in occupational medicine.Simultaneous exposure to physical and chemical agents is particularly frequent. The aim of the study was to evaluate the genotoxic risk to medical personnel concurrently exposed to raduonuclides and cytostatics, using changes in their lymphocyte cell genome as a bioindicator. Findings suggest the possibility of genotoxic implications of such exposure.
Keywords: genotoxic risk, occupational exposure, radionuclides, cytostatics, chromosomal aberrations, sister chromatid exchange

Title: Respiratory symptoms and immunological status in poultry food processing workers

Authors:

Journal: International Archive of Occupational and Environmental Health

Volume: 66
Year: 1994
Pages: from 339 to 342
Number of references: 25
Language: engleski
Summary: A group of 57 female workers employed in the processing of poultry food and 51 non-exposed control workers were studied to determine the possible relation between respiratory and immunological findings.Exposed workers with a positive skin prick test to poultry food extract demonstrated higher prevalences of all chronic respiratory symptoms than those with a negative skin test.Increased IgE serum level was found in 33% of the exposed and 7.8% of the control workers (p<0.01). Data confirm that immunological changes in the exposed workers may be associated with development of chronic respiratory symptoms.
Keywords: immunological reactions, respiratory symptoms, occupational exposure, poultry food workers

Title: Evidence if Harmful Health Effects of Occupational Asbestos Exposure

Summary: The manuscript represents the extended version of a study entitled " Evidence of Harmful Health Effects of Occupational Asbestos Exposure " printed in the Proceedings of Abstract Book of 4th International Inhalation Symposium hold in Hannover, 1993. The results are shown in four synoptic tables. In conclusion: Asbestos fibers of respirable size act as inflammatory challenge. In a group of shipyard workers with long-lasting asbestos exposure who developed asbestosis there is, probably, an inherted factor which does not allow leukocyte proliferation or matuaration to progress to the expected degree. Local activation of the immune system as reflected in the peripheral circulation coul be due to the appearance of a new asbestos exposure evoked antigen.

Summary: The aim of the study was to identify and define differences between diseased and non-diseased asbestos exposed shipyard workers. Both, data on medical histories and clinical-laboratory surveys were statistically evaluated. When compared to the non-diseased group, a significant increase in erythrocyte sedimentation rate, monocyte number, gamma-globulin and immunoglobulin levels was found in diseased subjects, followed by a decrease in segmented leukocyte percentage. These findings show the influence of local interference of asbestos fibers on systemic circulation.
Keywords: retrospective study, asbestos exposure, asbestosis, systemic circulation
