Summary: In order to determine whether the appearance of
occupational asbestos is related to cleared asbestos bodies (AB) and
macrophages (AM) the occurrence of AB and AM in the sputum of diseased and
non-diseased shipyard workers was investigated. AB were significantly more
frequent in the sputum of the diseased group, while AM were more frequent
in the sputum of the non-diseased group. The findings of AB and AM in the
sputum of asbestos exposed individuals is an easy way to detect "in vivo"
exposure to asbestos, and represents a good hallmark of exposure but not a
good hallmark of disease.

Summary: The manuscript represents the extended version of a study
entitled " Evidence of Harmful Health Effects of Occupational Asbestos
Exposure " printed in the Proceedings of Abstract Book of 4th International
Inhalation Symposium hold in Hannover, 1993. The results are shown in four
synoptic tables. In conclusion: Asbestos fibers of respirable size act as
inflammatory challenge. In a group of shipyard workers with long-lasting
asbestos exposure who developed asbestosis there is, probably, an inherted
factor which does not allow leukocyte proliferation or matuaration to
progress to the expected degree. Local activation of the immune system as
reflected in the peripheral circulation coul be due to the appearance of a
new asbestos exposure evoked antigen.

Summary: The aim of the study was to assess the health hazards to
asbestos
environmental exposure, using urban dogs as biological indicators. Lung
tissue samples of 36 randomly chosen dogs were examined. Among 15 dogs up
to four years old, only two lung samples were ferruginous body (FB)
positive. In the remaining 21 dogs, older than four years, 17 were FB
positive. A significant difference between the two groups of dogs was
found. These findings represent evidence of high mineral anorganic fiber
contamination of urban areas, as well as the accumulation of fibers in the
examined lungs, which can be considered a potential health risk for city
dwellers.

Summary: Reactions of the respiratory system to poultry food may be
associated with different allergic and non-alergic mechanisms.
Significantly higher prevalence of most of the respiratory symptoms was
determined in exposed workers than the controls (p<0.01).The majority of
the exposed workers (66.7%) reacted with a positive skin prick test to
poultry food. Exposure to poultry food dust through immunological
mechanisms may be associated with the development of chronic respiratory
symptoms.

Summary: In order to determine how much, if any, the appearance of
occupational asbestosis is related to cleared asbestos bodies and
macrophages we investigated the occurrence of asbestos bodies and
macrophages in the sputum of shipyard workers. The group of 494
asbestos-exposed shipyard workers was divided into two separate
well-matched groups. Asbestosis was verified in 65%, and not found in 35%
of the subjects.According to our results, the presence of asbestos bodies
in the sputum is a good hallmark of exposure but not a good hallmark of
disease, although it is significantly more frequent in the disesed group.
The more frequent findings of macrophages in the sputum of the non-diseased
group is confirmatiom that the functional ability of the alveolar
macrophages play an important role in the mechanism of lung defense.

Summary: The chronology of asbestos-related diseases abroad and in
Croatia is presented. The results of a study of asbestos disease which was
performed among the workers employed in a Croatian ship-repairing yard are
discussed. The presence of pleural thickening was observed in nine out of
51 workers. In six of those nine the pleural thickening was bilateral. This
is taken to signify that occupational health service should place more
emphasis on the study of asbestos-induced diseases and by applying
up-to-date criteria for disability assesment to make the right decisions.

Summary: The aim of the study was to identify and define differences
between diseased and non-diseased asbestos exposed shipyard workers. Both,
data on medical histories and clinical-laboratory surveys were
statistically evaluated. When compared to the non-diseased group, a
significant increase in erythrocyte
sedimentation rate, monocyte number, gamma-globulin and immunoglobulin
levels was found in diseased subjects, followed by a decrease in segmented
leukocyte percentage. These findings show the influence of local
interference of asbestos fibers on systemic circulation.

Summary: A free cell population from the Wistar rat lungs was
obtained by bronchoalveolar lavage, following intratracheal instillation of
inert particles and toxic fibers. Sacrifice of animals was performed at the
indicated postinstillation times. The quantity of phagocyted material per
alveolar cells, lungs and lymph node tissues was determined under the light
and fluorescent microscope. In conclusion: The transport and deposit of
foreign agents in the lung compartments depends on the physical
characteristics of the material instilled.

Summary: The response of a free cell population in rat lungs
intratracheally instilled with particles, co-mixture of particles and
fibers, and fibers, was examined.Lung free cells were obtained by
bronchoalveolar lavage.Cell quantity as well as cell quality was determined
by light and fluorescent microscopy. The results indicate that the
quantitaive response of the lung cell population from the alveolar
compartment of fiber instilled animals was postponed.

Summary: The aim of the study was to examine and compare the effects
of toxic fibers and inert particles on the functional ability of alveolar
macrophages obtained by determination of lung free cells in bronchoalveolar
lavage fluid of experimental animals.Cytological analysis provided insight
into the phagocytic activity and phagocytic capacity of alveolar
macrophages. From the results it can be concluded that crocidolit asbestos
may depress the functional ability of alveolar macrophages in order to
protect their host.
