Title: Aedes riparius (Dyar & Knab) a newly recorded species of mosquitoes (Dipt., Culicidae) in Croatia

    Authors:
    Merdić, Enrih (141743)
    Journal: Biološki vestnik
    Number: 1
    ISSN: 0520-1969

Summary: Aedes riparius was described by Dyar and Knab in 1907. Thisspecies is very closley related to Ae. cantans but differs inmale and larvae. Both species belong to the cantans groupcharacteristic of the forest zone in the northern parts of EuropeAsia, and North America. The present materila was collected on May 23, 1989 in MuškoOstrvo Wood, a community of Genisto elate - Quercetum roborisnear the village og Stari Mikanovci, Croatia (UTM - CR2/11) Thedetermination has been confirmed by Jan Minar from Praha. The main characteristic for determination of the larvae are givenwith in the contex of this work in four photos. Thay are: innerand median frontal hairs, 8 denticles of omb in an irregular row, denticles of pecten and hair trufts before comon base. This finds extends the known border of the Ae. riparius arealfarther south, and proves the presence of the relict species inthe Croatia. As the ecological conditiones in Slovenia are goodenough for survival of thid species, the presence of Ae.riparius could be expected in Slovenia As well.

Summary: Kopački rit, the area of great faunal and floral diversity in thefloodplain of the Danube River in northeastern Croatia, isportected as Special Zoological Reserve by Croatia law. Owing toits climate, its position at the confluence of two bir rivers, its relief, vegetation, and other ecological factors; this areais exceptionally suitable for developmant of large population ofmosquitoes. The mosquitoes were collected with CDC traps with CO2as atractant. Five samples were taken once a month from May toSeptember, for 24 hours each and at five localities within theKopački ritarea. About 230.000 mosquitoes were collected. Thefollowing 11 species were found: An. meseae, An. hyrcanus, Cs.annulata, Cq. richiardii, Ae. caspius, Ae. excrucians, Ae.sticticus, Ae. vexans, Ae. geniculatus, Ae. cinereus and Cx.pipiens. Seven of these species are habitual in wetlands or floodplains. Thanks to the ideal breeding conditions and because its femalesare autogenous, Ae. vexans makes up about 95% of the mosquitopopulation in the Kopački rit. At the begining of June 1990, thearea was partly and temporarily flooded, creating favorableconditionfor the growth of the large populations of mosquitoes.Upon their emergence from the pupe, adult mosquitoes begin tomigrate. This work shows that mosquitoes migrations exist andthey follow the direction that was traced in this investigation(Kopački rit-Tikveš-Haljevo).

Summary: In the period from April to October 1989 and 1990. 1930 specimans have been caught. 12 species of mosquitoes has been identified. Among the determined species Aedes pulchritarsis is noted for the first time in Slavonia region. The vertical distribution has been researched on four sites from 125 to 728 m above the sea.The number of mosquitoes as well as the number of species decrease as the hight increases. The greatest similarity is between sites which are close each other and smaller between farer sites which is shown by coefficient of similarity after Sorensen.

Summary: forests are smoe of the most favourable habitats for mosquitoes. Each forest, depending on its plant composition, can be characterized by clasification of plant communities based on characteristic species. This paper presents the results of tests based on the hypotesis that each forest community (in level of association) has different fauna of mosquitoes. The similarities of mosquito fauna in four forest communities on the south Pannonian Plain (Central Europe, Croatia) were under observationfor the period of tree summers. Each of the investigated forest communities, provided excellent ecological conditions for mosquitoes, but small differences between tham were sufficient to cause a discrepancy in abundance and species composition of mosquitoes

Summary: EightPalearctic species belong to the cantans group wich arecharacteristic for forest yone in Palearctic and Nearctic. Aedescantans, Ae. excrucinans, Ae. behnigy, Ae. beklemishevi,Ae.annulipes, Ae. flavescens, Ae. cypryus and Ae. riparius. arenoted in cantans group in Palearctic. Only four out ofeightspecies of the cnatans group have been recorded inyugoslavia so far. They are: Ae. cantans (Strobl, 1898), Ae.excrucinas (Božičić, 1982), Ae. annulipes (Langhofer, 1916), Ae.flavescens (Pavišić, 1952). I noted Aedes riparius, a new species in fauna of Culicidae inYugoslavia near the village of Stari Mikanovci (Croatia, UTMCR2/02). I establish the presence of its larvae in wateraccumulated in the trail of tractorin oak forest community ofGenisto elate -Quercetum roborisin May 23, 1989. The mentionedlarvae was cought with Ae. punctor. Ae. riparius is a speciescharacteristic for the woods in north Palearctic and it is verysimilar to Ae. cantans(as imago). Because of this it is not usulathat Ae. riparius is extremely rare in yugoslavia. This find hasbeen the most southern in Europe so far, and it indicates theextension of the known areal.

Summary: Investigations in the Vinodol area (VL4/VK3) have done in June,July and August 1991. Larvae and imago have collected withstandard methods, CDC trap baited with dry icewere also used. These traps were put in 8 localities and operated 20 houts perday, once per month. Ten species of mosquiotes were identified inVinodol area. They are: Anopheles claviger, An. plumbeus, An.maculipennis, Culiseta annulata, Aedes sticticus, Ae. vexans, Ae.geniculatus, Ae. cinereus, Ae. rosicus and Culex pipiens complex. Two groups of breeding places were found here: natural andartifical. Natural breeding places are the most inpotrant formosquito developmant in spring time. Artifical breeding placesare active through all season but thay are the most impotrant inmidsummer period. Eight species of mosquitoes out of tendetermined here breed in natural breeding places. The specimensof Ae. vexans species is the most abundant in spring and earlysummer period. The biggest problem for Vinodol area is housemosquito Cx. pipiens complex. Breeding places for this mosquitoare all temporary water bodies such as glass of water, barrelsand polluted water too.

Summary: The topic of this project was to make list of present mosquitospecies in the area of Tribalj. The main aim was to find breedingplaces, because local population consider Artifical Lake as mainsource of larvae of mosquitoes. The result of investigations wasthat Artifical Lake is not sours of mosquitoes because mosquitolarvae has lot of natural enemies in the lake. The main breedingplaces are artifical water bodies in the houses and arruoundtham.
