Summary: The project "Vertebrate paleontology and Quaternary
cronostratigraphy" provides for researches of three year duration. It is
basic scientific research, which one part must be done on the field, and
the other part contains theoretical and experimental research. By thematic,
five narrow scientifical research units could be separated: a)
investigation of Lower Pleistocene bony breccias and determination of
genera and species of rodent group (Rodentia), b) determination of fossil
and subfossil fauna of the Vindija cave and absolute sediment dating, c)
mapping of Quaternary deposits and loess profiling along the Adriatic
coast, sampling for sedimentological and malacological analyses, as well as
for absolute dating, d) investigative field-working with opening of deposit
profiles, collecting of fossil material, sampling for analyses and
recognoscing of Quaternary deposit stratigraphy, e) field-work on
archeological sites, determination of Holocene faunistic assemblages and
biotope reconstruction. The field-working investigation results will enable
the taxonomic determination of fossil and subfossil vertebrata,
paleoecological, paleoclimatological and evolutionary interpretation of
Pleistocene faunas, as well as the recognoscing of stratigraphy and geology
of certain localities. The sedimentological analyses and mapping of
Quaternary deposits will enable paleogeographical interpretation,
respectively will establish disposition and distribution paleoenvironments
during the Quaternary, as well as the correlation with relevant occurences
in Europe.
Research goals: The research goal is determined by up to date
performedscientific investigate work, respectively by the unknowns
whichremained open, unsolved problems, and new investigations.
Bypaleontological and morphogenetical determination of fossilmaterial and
cultural remains from Upper Pleistocene of theVindija cave exactly will be
reconstructed succession andprocesses which are relevant during the
deposit sedimentation. The answer about exactly age of the Neandertal
appearance, respectively the species Homo sapiens, has been looked for,
aswell as about environment and its changes, and
microevolutionaryprocesses under which had been particular vertebrate
groups.Investigative speleological, sedimentological and
paleontologicalfield-working have the goals to determine and link the part
relationships of the site, as well as the relationships withother
localities. The goal of sedimentological researches is toestablish all
Quaternary sediment appearances, to determine sortof sediments and origin
circumstances, as well as the sedimentarymechanisms and at the end to give
paleogeographicalinterpretation. The goal of species determiantion of the
rodentgroup is to establish stratigraphical sheme of Lower Pleistocenebony
breccias. As well, the profiling of loess deposits alongthe Adratic coast
will establish the stratigraphicaldetermination and correlation with
Slavonian loess profiles.Co-operation on archeological investigations in
northern Croatiaand determination of attendant animal remains from pits
andgraves will enable the reconstruction of hunting
oragricultural-cattlebreeding economy of the Eneolithic or BronzeAge human
assemblages.
