Summary: The Hydrogeological Map of Croatia is a fundamental scientific project for the study of groundwater in our country. Groundwater is one of most valuabe natural resources of Croatia on which is now based 90% of public water supply. The project includes the processing of existing data and new field exploration in accord to the accepted Instructions for this map. For a final display, the GIS information technology (ARC/INFO software) is used giving to the project of the Basic Hydrogeological Map an actual world level. The whole territory of Croatia is divided into 73 sheets of the basic map scale 1/100.000 (in accord to the old Greenwich system) - the Basic Geological Map, the data of which are used in teh hydrogeological exploration. Hydrogeological information system (HGIS) consists of a graphic base and a data base of all water phenomena and constructions. The system is conceived in the way to make possible further programme development and various interpretations. The HGIS is one of the thematic centres of the Environmental Information System of the Republic of Croatia. A special value of the HGIS are direct field and laboratory research which are nowdays directed to the genetic changes in the underground. For each sheet of the Basic Hydrogeological Map scale 1/100.000 its Explonatory Notes are prepared which, as a worthy scientific publication, undergo a detailed recension by top Croatian hydrogeological experts. The project has been divided into two suprojects which cover two regions of genetically different groundwater types (Pannonian basin and the Dinaric karst area).

Research goals: The Basic Hydrogoelogical Map of the Republic of Croatia scale 1/100.000 is the main basis for the groundwater exploration and management. As a part of the Environmental Information System of the Republic of Croatia, this map represents one of fundamental elements in the environment protection. The direct field and laboratory exploration is a part of the fundamental scientific research by whic, about this for Croatia extremely vulnerable natural resource, old and new facts are studied and the cognitions are developed.
