Summary: Geochemical mapping of European countries encounters
problems of interference of the environmental pollution into the natural
elemental cycles and distribution. Geochemical mapping of Croatia, still
at the preliminary stage, will face great deal of such terrains. As a
tentative model Zagreb city and its surroundings is a suitable example.
The research took place on a surface of 700 km2, including urban,
industrial, rural and forested regions. Samples of soils (400) were
collected along a regular grid formed by statistical sampling design and
analysis of variance. A part of the investigation is devoted to the
assessment of pollution by comparison of anomalous values in the Zagreb
city with regions which are polluted with heavy metals unambiguously by
man-made activity (like effects of war, recent and old mining,
agrotechnical amendments etc.) Influence of pollution on the architectural
and dimension stones and monuments are also a part of the investigation.
Keywords: Geochemical mapping, heavy metals, soil, environmental pollution, sources of pollution, dimension stone, Zagreb city.
Research goals: The aim of the project is to plot reliable
geochemical maps of heavy metals in soil of the Zagreb city and its
surroundings based on statistical sampling design. The results will
beutilized in assessment of pollution of the natural environments
endangered by growing urbanization, industrialization and use of
agrotechnical measures (Lika, Gorski Kotar, Istria). It will be the basis
for preparation of geochemical maps of Croatia and source of information
for the health public care (medicine, agriculture, groundwater pollution
protection, etc.). The final tesk of the research is to publish the
geochemical atlas and its promotion for multidisciplinary utility. A part
of the up-to-date research has been already published in domestic and
foreign scientific magazines (publications, books) and presented at the
domestic and international meetings and symposia.
