Summary: The surrounding of the village Oštarije, covered by forests and arable lands and provided as a touristic, hunting and recreation resort and healt-food production area, was stroked by an intentional blusting of the ammunition stockpile during retreat of the Yugoslav army. The disastrous explosion of 6000 tonns of the ammunition made a severe impact on the rural environment on the surface of 50 km2. The investigation revealed: heavy metal contamination in soil and biota at the moment of explosion and two years later. The determination was done on Hg, Cd, Cr, Mn, Ni and Pb and reached the averages in the acutely contamionated area of Zagreb city.

Summary: The disastrous explosion of 6000 tonnes of ammunition produced a severe pollution impact on the rural enviornment within 50 km2. A reconnaissance survey revealed heavy metal contamination of soil and biota, reaching ten times of the background values at the explosion site. The pourpose of the investigation is to determine a possible growndwater pollution hazard due to heavy metal remobilization from soils at the polluted area. Soil samples (37) were analyzed to determine amount and distribution of bioavailable and exchangeable metallic ion fractions by 1M ammonium acetate extraction. The experiments using NH4Ac leachates suggest that major parts of the pollutants is present as metallic particulate matter, or as wheathering resistant oxides. Mobilization of the metals depends greatly upon the local karst hydrography, as leaching of the contaminated soil is likely to occur through flooding of the karst polje.

Summary: The Idrija ore deposit, with its huge metal load exceeding a few 100,00 tonnes of mercury is a worldwide phenomenon. A semi-millenium of mining and processing of the ore in Idrija induced severe contamination of all natural compartments: soils, soil air, air and stream sediments with the exception of spring-and stream-waters. Mercury level in soils and stream sediments exceeds MAC values greatly and will be a metter of concern for many years. Whilst the air pollution will ferminate with the closure of operation. The water media is not endogered due to the protective nature of well buffered karstic waters which controls the release of mercury pollutants from the sediments by their high alkalinity.

Summary: The soil geochemical mapping of Zagreb urban and rural area covered 748 km2 with 420 samples, taken on the regular grid concerning the analysis of variance design. The topsoil samples were analyzed on Hg, Pb, Cr, Ni, Mn, Zn, Cu and Cd by FAAS and AAS after digestionwith aqua regia. The obtained data were statistically elaborated (basic statistics, factor analysis, cluster analysis) and the geochemical maps of the Zagreb city constructed by Kriging technique. The analysis of variance has shown that the urban part has significantly augmented background with several outstanding outliers for heavy metals. Unusual hg-pollution along the Sava river terraces has been determined as well.

Summary: The paper presents results of investigations of stone samples from the Vinkuran quarry, the ancient "Cava Romana", in the vicinity of Pula, Istria. The samples are compared with the stone from the external curved wall of the Arena in Pula. It has been established that the external curved wall of the Arena has been built entirely of stone blocks originating from Vinkuran quarry. The stone has been petrographically determined as coquina limestone, coquinite and microcoquinite, known in the market as "fiorito" or "travertino", and "unito" or "statuario". A detailed description is given of the ancient and present quarries.

Summary: In the last few years pollution monitoring of aquatic, soil and atmospheric environments of Zagreb has become a major subject of geochemical research. Detailed studies of heavy metal pollution in wider area of Zagreb are currently performed. As a test for analytics and range of concentrations, preliminary investigation along two, approximately perpendicular traverses over urban and industrial areas of Zagreb were executed and compared with data obtained from soil samples of rural and afforested areas surrounding Zagreb. Mercury was analysed by a modified flameless atomic absorption method combined with pyrolysis, while content of lead, zinc and nickel was measured by standard AAS techniques after acid digestion. Severe anthropogenic influence was observed in the case of lead for which in urban areas seven times higher content (224 ppm) than the average background values (33 ppm) in rural areas was encountered. Zinc is almost three times augmented from an average background level of 66 ppm to 180 ppm in urban areas. Mercury content is doubled (121 ppb) in comparison to the background values (52 ppb), while nickel shows only slight influence of anthropogenic pollution and only a 20 per cent increase over the background level (from 26 ppm to 32 ppm). The obtained data confirm that Zagreb encounters pollution problems.

Summary: The paper presents a survey of the possible origins of the strain and deformation of stone. A range of origins which can be influenced is suggested, from those occurring under natural conditions in the deposit to those resulting from technology supplied in quarrying, stone processing and dressing, including environment with natural and technogenic factors. No new information can be given on the behavior of the stone processed and used in building according to the most recent technologies, because the time-span of its exposure to the influence of natural and technogenic factors has been too short.

Summary: The evaluation of the heavy metal discharge from liming materials into the arable soil in NW Croatia is based upon the contents of Fe, Mn, Pb, Cu, Zn, Cd, Co and Hg in the studied carbonate raw materials, obtained under simulated conditions of the lowest presumed activity (pH>3) which can occure in the agroecological environment. From the agroecological view point, the heavy metal contents of the analized liming materials are much lower than the permissible levels. Only cadmium contents indicate that a certain amount of care should be taken into account. Because cadmium is bound in labile forms (pH>3 soluble fraction) it has to be considered quite mobile and biologically available in limed arable soils that are affected by drastic pH changes in the agroecological environment.

Summary: Dimension stone deposits are described in the conception of mobilistic view of the structure of the Dinarides, regarding the stratigraphic units, especialy in the coast region. The regions of Istria and Dalmatia belong to the Adriatic carbonate platform or Adriaticum. The dimension stone in Istria are situated in the limestones of Upper Jurassic, of Lower and Upper Cretaceous. In the region of Dalmatia the greatest spreading enclose limestones of the Upper Cretaceous age. In the continental part different varieties of limestones were exploited, the limestone conglomerates of Paleogene age and the limestone of Paleogene age. Regarding the dimension stone exploitation the island of Brač takes a significanmt place, being famous of "the marble of Brač", limestone of Upper Cretaceous age. Numerous old quarries cover the small island of Vrnik. The image of our Mediterranean in our urban building belongs to autochtonous limestone. However, nowdays, some of the towns in the Mediterranean loose that image using in building alochtonous granite instead of limestone.

Summary: Investigation of the man-made dispersion halo of heavy metals in the soil surrounding the site of the disastrous explosion of ammunition stockpile in Oštarije. The surrounding area of 50 km2, was randomly sampled on an irregular grid (34 samples). The adversities of the augmented heavy metal concentration are well known. Hg and Cd are the most deleterious. The anomalies in the center of the explosion are 200 fold for Cd (12.5 ppm) and 100 fold for Hg (5600 ppb) in comparison to the background levels of 0.1 ppm and 50 ppb respectively. Influence of the explosion has been observed at distance of 8 km.

Summary: With completion of the reconnaissance study of heavy metal pollution of soil and atmosphere in the vicinity of the major rural and urban roads in the area of Zagreb, the soil investigation have been extended on a regular grid (350 samples) of 700 km2 to evaluate the distribution of anthropogenic heavy metal contamination. Mercury concentrations in soil, flood plain sediments, roadside soil and atmosphere were measured and correlated. Three different sources of mercury pollution were determined on the basis of map analysis. 1. Mercury pollution by traffic and industry, 2. Suspended matter from the Sava river, deposited as flood plain sediments, 3. Ancient Pb-Zn deposits on the Medvednica mountain.

    Held: from 10/20/93 to 10/23/95
Summary: To determine the natural compositional trends and to enable further extension of the exploration activity on the basis of preliminary results it is necessary to select the best fitting sample design. Since unbalanced hierarchical sampling designs have been recommended and most widely used in soil geochemistry studies, a five-level sampling design has been chosen for this study. The highest level distinguishes variances among samples from Zagreb urban area (sensu stricto) and its surroundings (wide area of Zagreb), the next level enables the determination of variance between samples in rregular grid 1x1 km (Zagreb urban area) and 2x2 km (wider area). Furthermore, variances of samples on 100 m and 10 m from the main grid samples were determined at random grid points and chosen directions (i.e. north, south, east or west from the main point). The fifth level reflects an effect and size of analytical error and is determined by replicated sampling on the selected sites at random.

Summary: Investigation area comprises 34x22 km. Total humber of soil samples is 350 taken from 0-15 cm depth. Sampling is done by unbalanced hierarchical scheme enabling variance analysis. Air-dried and sieved soil samples (fraction <0.16 mm) were digested by aqua regia and analyzed by AAS, Cd is measured by FAAS (Graphite kuevette) and Hg by pyrolisis and Au-wire amalgamation. Statistical analysis and map construction ("Zapatone" technique) clearly point out anthropogenic influence on Hg, Pb and Zn distribution, while Cr, Ni and Mn pollution is still not proved.

    Held: from 05/11/95 to 05/18/94
Summary: The research "Tracing karstic waters by uranium isotopes" in Dinaride region is the first investigation of natural radioactive characteristics of underground karst waters in Croatia and Slovenia. Uranium is present in all underground waters in concentration, easily measurable by alpha spectrometry. Its two valence nature in combination with water-aquifer interaction results in wide concentration dispersion, and isotopic ratio of U234 and U238. Such variations of natural uranium in ground waters can be used as natural tracers to study flow systems in karstic regions and to deduce the underground flow patterns.
