Summary: The oceanographic databse serves for fast and easy searc data and information related on investigation, exploration and protection of the Adriatic Sea. As a part of database developing processes and flow diagrams with regard to oceanographic researchare are analyzed. Generic entities are assigned for each process. Classification of parameters for database and database dictionary are done. Database model based on object transformation methodology is developed, with no regard to real time demands andaffordable technology. Objects and their relations are the basicplatform. The basic functions of the model are developed at thefirst phase. Unique logical database model with no redundancy resulted from integration of such sub models. It's logical structure is controlled with standard normalization rules. Logical model is transformed into relational model at the next phase, what is at the same time favorable for update, select andreport operations. CASE tool is used. Database is developed with ORACLE SUBP, and ARC/INFO is used for graphical representation because the data are geocoded, with regard to space. Other thematic are easily added because the database is developing in such machine and programmable environment that satisfy OSI model principles. Database includes the referral database and few other segments in a view of the sea as follows: marine meteorology, physical oceanography, classical oceanography, chemistry, biology and fisheries. Database is in the course of development and sofar the specific segments are done as marine meteorology, part ofthe physical oceanography (currents, waves, sea levels), classical and chemical oceanography, while other segments are under work. Listing of measured and aggregated data, and their analyzed results are done and given in a way of table forms, or ingraphical forms with ARC/INFO GIS. With respect to the simplicity to the end user, it is special created basic geographic layer, anda few thematic layers with ARC/INFO so the analyzes could be done by the user interactively with arc-VIEW at WINDOWS environment. The basic problem is to insert data because the great deal ofdata are in printed form, and quality control should be done for the data on other computers, what is a complicated and expensive, long work.

Keywords: database, oceanography, referal data, measuring data, generic models, Entity-Relationship model, relational database, ORACLE, GIS ARC/INFO

Research goals: The basic purpose of the project is to make prerequisites for effectiveness of the research and professional oceanographic explorations. For such goal it is of vital importance access to the oceanographic data as are: sea exploration scientists or institutions, measured parameters, measuring methods, data control quality procedures, reports, and analyzes of result of the measured data. For this purpose relational oceanographic database is under development, with goal to be on disposal to the end user through the information networks (CARNet, CROPAK, OMNET, etc).
