Summary: This project is based on investigation, improvement and
application a new methods of underground bauxite exploitation. Open stope
method wich is most common in underground bauxite exploitation in Croatia
is not safe enough because of forming the large stopes in deposits with
competent roof rocks. In weak roof rocks the losses are sometime 50% (S.
Vujec, 1991; I. Galić, 1991). In this project several methods are
suggested for bauxite deposits with competent roof rocks (B. Perić, S.
Vujec, R. Zvežina, 1992; B. Perić, S. Vujec, 1992). Stability of
crosscuts and drifts in bauxite are improved with application of rock
bolting (S. Majić, S. Vujec, 1990; S. Majić, 1993). Laboratory testing
are improved with construction the new shear machine (M. Petzel, 1992,
1993). Rock slope stability in open pits are explored on economical (K.
Grabowsky, V. Rendulić, 1992) and safety aspects (R. Zvežina, 1993). The
history of exploration and exploitation is described in details in three
papers (R. Marušić, K. Sakač, S. Vujec, 1993).
Keywords: bauxite, excavation method, sublevel caving method, open stope method, rock bolting, ventilation of mines, slope stability, soil consolidation, numerical modelling, finite element method, finite difference method
Research goals: The main issues of the research are: - introduction
of the rock bolting to the underground openings in bauxite and other rocks
in deposit, from the theoretical and practical point of view, -
improvement of safety and economical results of the bauxite exploitation,
- finding out better or new methods of bauxite exploitation for the
deposits under different natural conditions, with the purpose of risk
reduction and growth of exploitation output, - investigation of ventilation
systems, calculation procedure, and measurement methods, - sampling and
laboratory testing of nonhomogenous and discontinuous rock, - slope
stability analysis with the limit equilibrium method and finite element
method.
