Summary: The paper presents the initial thoughts, hypotheses andapproaches of a research project. Project is based on theelectro-hydraulic analogy in the case of loose clastics saturatedwith fresh groundwater. New approximate geohydraulic parametershave been introduced: the indices of hydraulic conductivity, transmissivity and leakage, calculated from resistivity soundingdata. This method can be applied for low-costly solving ofseveral important water management problems.

Summary: The water supply in the town and the region Varaždin is based on the use of groundwater as the least polluted natural resource. Chemical analysis of groundwater samples indicates the increased nitrate concentration. In order to indentify the origin of nitrates and assess the posibility of improvement of the present situation, the numeric model of the pollution flow and discharge has been worked out.

Summary: The paper describes land and water resources of Croatia, pollution sources and causes - waste water, use of fertilizers and pesticides. The surface water and groundwater monitoring is analyzed and their contamination with nitrates, phosphates, pesticides and some toxic metals. Generally, in Croatia only the surface waters are systematically monitored, while the groundwater quality is monitored only in the existing well fields supplying the public water distribution systems or within the frameworkof the hydromelioration systems control. The data on agricultural pollution sources and causes are either unavailable or limited. According to the available data, with local exceptions, the global pollution of the surface and groundwaters is not alarming. The urgent need id underlined for development of integrated water quality monitoring systems for the Black Sea and Adriatic Sea catchment, with a special program of the territorial sea quality control and interstate programs for border streamflows.

Summary: The roof of tapped aquifer in the area of Ravnik-Kutina is composed of silty and clayey sediments within which the interlayers and lenses of sand occur. The influence of hydrogeological parameters of these deposits (vertical hydraulic conductivity and specific yield), on the development of depression cone is very small under a relatively short-lasted test pumping. This phenomenon can result in wrong conclusions on the aquifer boundary conditions. The explorations on the true boundary conditions of semiconfined aquifer, which was performed on the basis of a long monitoring and a relatively intense extraction from the pumping site Ravnik, showed that the leakage amount from semipermeable covering deposits increases considerably during the first years of extraction.

Summary: Northern or Pannonian Croatia has relatively suitable hydrometorological and hydrogeological conditions for groundwater use. In the largest part of this region, the precipitation infiltration is so high that it enables - if only its plains are considered - four to six times greater groundwater extraction than the actual one in the whole region. It is necessary to mention also that 96% of the actual public water supply of this region is based on groundwater. Concerning its hydrogeological conditions, this entire region forms one complex hydrogeological region - the Northern Croatian or Panonian hydrogeological region. Within it, three hydrogeological provinces are separated: low mountain massifs, hilly margin of mountain massifs and plains. Groundwater quality is, at least now, mainly suitable for public water supply and irrigation. However, the groundwater protection has become and will be ever more complex in large plains due to a high present and potential concentration of urban, industrial, traffic and agriculture sources of pollution. Besides, geohydraulic connections between the highest yielding aquifer and already very polluted main rivers are extremely high.

Summary: A current research project, based on the electro-hydraulic analogy, is shortly described. The basic geoelectric parameter, resistivity, of loose sediments saturated with groundwater is used to evaluate approximate values of important geohydraulic parameters. This method cuts exploration costs considerably and can be applied to solving several water management problems related to horizontal and vertical groundwater flow. It refers particularly to groundwater quality protection in areas of developed agriculture. Ten research pilot areas have been established in the plains of northern Croatia and project results in five of them are briefly discussed.

Summary: Qaternary deposits in wide area of Drava valley build's aquifer with large amount of groundwater. Western part consist of sand and gravel layers, while eastern part has predominantly uniform sand mixed with layers of silt and clay. Natural replenishment of groundwater from precipitation in the region is higher then groundwater use for public water supply, but local distribution network and available groundwater budget in some eastern parts is such that planned necessity exceeded local natural groundwater recharge. In central and western parts of the region exist surplus of available groundwater budget what can be interesting for public water supply of neighboring deficit part and agricultural purposes. Specially is important convenient relationship between rechargeable and deposited store of groundwater and possibility of induced infiltration.

Meeting: XVIIth Conference of the Danube Countries on Hydrological Forecasting and Hydrological Bases of Water Management
    Held: from 09/05/94 to 09/09/94
Summary: The paper deals with one of the pilot areas of a current applied hydrogeology research project based on the electro-hydraulic analogy. In large river plains filled with loose clastic sediments and saturated with groundwater of a commonly low salinity, the geohydraulic parameters controlling the vertical groundwater flow through covering aquitardsare substituted with their approximate "counterparts": hydraulic conductivity index and leakage index. These means of the specific electrical resistivity of those sediments. The map showing the distribution of leakage index values may be used for a quick, low-cost evaluation of groundwater vulnerability to heavy agricultural pollution by fertilizers and pesticides.

Meeting: XVIIth Conference of the Danube Countries on Hydrological Forecasting and Hydrological Bases of Water Management
    Held: from 09/05/94 to 09/09/94
Summary: The groundwater exploration within the drainage basin of Drava river in Croatia is considerably increased. The main source for public water supply is the aquifer formatted in heterogeneous Quaternary deposits up to 300 m thick. This is spread over the whole area of wide Drava valley with gently sloping toward east. The western parts consist of gravel and sand with high permeability in contrast to eastern parts made up predominantly of uniform sands alternated with clay and silt layers. The infiltration from precipitation is the main source of natural recharge. However, in condition of intensive groundwater extraction the inducing recharge from Drava river flow could be realizable. Because of great groundwater reservoir potential the aquifer has overall regional significance. Nevertheless, there are some locations within the region where consumer demands exceed local groundwater resources. The paper presents groundwater analysis experience in Croatian part of Drava valley with main characteristics of aquifer.

    Held: from 09/05/94 to 09/09/94
Summary: Sustainable development and use of groundwater resources start to be imperative in the future. Priorities of public water supply in groundwater extraction increase the conflict of interest with industry, agriculture and other consumers. The concept of sustainable operation and management of groundwater budget will be shown on the area of Osijek (925 km2) through effective rainfall and percolation process analysis. Effective rainfall recharges aquitard and in the long term insure groundwater extraction from leaky aquifer in the amount of 27.000.000 m3 per annum. Results of measurement and mathematical models are briefly given.

Summary: The basic aim of the thesis was to explore the recharge of a semiconfined aquifer which occurs in the area of the pumping site Ravnik during a relatively heavy and long pumping. Simultaneously, in this area and within a scientific research project in the domain of electro-hydraulic analogy, it was studied the relationship between the specific electrical resistivity of Quaternary deposits saturated with groundwater, determined by the resistivity sounding, and pertaining hydrogeological parameters of the semipermeable covering layer determined in the process of model calibration.

Summary: At the Ravnik pumping site, 8 wells are being operated producing about 60 l/s of water. The demand is greater for 20 more l/s. The wells were shortly test pumped to determine their present specific capacity. A mathematical model showed that the total groundwater recharge is 28 % above the pumped amount of water, thus, the required increment of the pumped water amount is possible. However, it is necessary to revitalize all the well sand two more wells, now inactive, to put also in operation.
