Summary: In July 1991 started an applied hydrogeological research
project in the electro-hydraulic analogy domain within large
alluvial porous media saturated with groundwater of a common
salinity. By using the resistivity sounding data, important
geohydraulic parameters can be estimated accurately enough and
considerably low-costly in comparison with conventional methods.
The method of computation of necessary apparent geohydraulic
parameters: the transmissivity index and the leakage index was
researched and defined.
The research results can be applied for: the selection of
optimal locations and arrangements of pumping sites, the
determination of pumping site sanitary protection zones, the
estimate of alluvial aquifer recharge by the infiltration of
precipitation and the estimate of groundwater vulnerability by
agricultural pollution (fertilizers and pesticides). These
results can be applied in almost all plains of large European
rivers occurring within the zone of moderate climate.
The international cooperation has obvious advantages.
Several institutions from Germany, Hungary, Austria, Italy and,
partly, from France responded affirmatively to the proposals for
cooperation. A part of this research project ("Mapping of
vertical permeability of loose sediments in large river plains
by means of geophysical exploration") makes a contribution to an
international research project having been organized by the
Commission of the European Communities (COST Action 66
"Pesticides - Soil - Environment").
Keywords: Electro-hydraulic analogy, hydraulic conductivity index, transmissivity index, leakage index, alluvial aquifer, covering aquitard, large river plains, northern Croatia
Research goals: The basic goal of this applied hydrogeological
research project is to determine a reliable relationship between two
parameters, the hydraulic conductivity and specific electric** resistivity
of loose clastics saturated with fresh groundwater and occurring in the
large river plains of northern Croatia. After determining this
relationship, two apparent geohydraulic parameters: the transmissivity
index and the leakage index can be computed from the data obtained by
shallow resistivity sounding. These indices control enough accurately the
horizontal and vertical groundwater flows in large alluvial deposits. The
parameter values obtained that way and plotted on maps may serve to solve
several important water management problems in these river plains. They
are: the discovery of high-yielding aquifers, the location of optimal
pumping sites, aquifer modelling, the sanitary protection zoning of pumping
sites, the estimate of precipitation infiltration magnitude and the
groundwater vulnerability to agricultural pollution (fertilizers and
pesticides). The research results can be applied not only in the plains of
all large rivers in northern Croatia but also in almost all such river
plains within the moderate climate zone. This research method is very
fast, sufficiently accurate and, minimally, several times less-costly than
the earlier applied methods. The aim is also to launch an international
research cooperation within this project; either within the European Union
cooperation in science and technology (COST Actions), or via bilateral
scientific cooperation. By accomplishing it, (a) the number of research
pilot areas would be increased, (b) the huge European scientific potential
would be utilized and (c) the relationship hydraulic conductivity -
electrical resistivity, the basis of this research project, would be more
accurately determined.
