Summary: Causes and phenomena leading to damages due to overvoltage stressin low voltage windings of large power transformers in delta connection are investigated. Since winding damages occur almostas a rule afters faults of auxiliary equipment, the investigation primarily deals with the phenomena leading to faults of the equipment, and secondly with effects of these faults on overvoltage inside the transformer. The investigation is both theoretical and experimental, and data about the faults and phenomena have been gathered on site. Experiments on site with live networks will be performed at the end of the project if the client should find the results of preceding investigations interesting enough to subsidize them.

Research goals: The goal is to increase the reliability of transformers in operation, in particular of those of domestic production. This is one of the prerequistites for survival on the world market. The specified goals will not be realised only through this investigation, but its results might improve the conditions for their realisation. A more immediate goal is to improve the level of knowledge of the conditions in which transformers operate. The expected result of the investigation is also to link knowledge and facts, causes and consequences, and to give relevant explanations. The new knowledge can be the basis for better dimensioning of transformers and for taking measures for limitation of the phenomena in the network that endanger the transformer.
