Summary: Researches on identification and formulation of an adequate conceptual model of the intelligent network gave sophisticated directions for decisions relating to functional, topological and technological evolution of the national telecommunication network to the intelligent one. This evolution can be done through introduction and distribution of some types of network nodes working as intelligent agents. This implicates searching for an adequate analytical model for information traffic routing and performance evaluation for the broadband network. Results offer some verification of conceptual models including: - processing and routing of multimedia services, - interface models between terrestrial and space communication network by using intelligent satellites (COST 226), - performance modelling of high speed switching modules (ATM) and ultra-high capacity transmission (COST 239); this results have an impact on development and rebuilding of the national telecommunication network, - workstation implementation for telletraffic forecasting, - education of young reserchers and new experts. As a specially important result we have to emphasize the implementation of the optical cable system from Hungarian boarder to Zagreb as the segment 7a and from Zagreb to Rijeka as segment 7b included in the international project TEL. At the same time, these segments are vital parts of the national intelligent network backbone.

Research goals: The priority of the research in the project "Intelligent telecommunication network" is to study information - communication phenomenon. This network, used as a tool, provides us to be aware, more deeply, in the role of information, knowledge and new ideas in the human life. At the other side, used as an object of the research, it offers a reasonable solution for substitution of a lot of material and power resources by information. Intelligent network problem domain includes some important elements as: - research of the information phenomenon as a capital resource and as the most important knowledge support element in the artificial expert agents structure, - need for some modification of communication model based on classical information theory, initiated by relationships between distributed artificial expert agents, - identification and research of feasible information - logical models in the domain of artificial intelligence, Expected reults areas follows: - evolution of telecommunications development toward an intelligent network, including new service processing concepts, integration of terrestrial and space network via intelligent satellites as interface models, structuring and performance simulation for high speed switching modules (ATM) and ultra-high capacity (optical) transmission network, - introduction of new forecasting models for service and information traffic able to describe behavior of a multi-information sources, - education of young researchers and experts in telecommunications.
