Summary: In the eighties much attention has been paid to monitoring and diagnostics of electrical machines. Standard methods used so far have been expanded with up-to-date, comprehensive and efficient ones in order to increase the reliability and efficiently of the machine, reduce the influence of human factor in large and complex power systems, and extend the machine life. The importance of insulating system, its complexity and interaction with other machine parts have conditioned the development of a special branch of diagnostics based on the state of insulating system and its components. Through synthesis of our own and foreign finding we have performed theoretical and experimental investigations in order to find the diagnostic methods based on tests of insulating systems of electrical machines and transformers. The investigations comprise factors that influence the diagnostics of insulating systems of electrical machines such as insulating system materials, construction and technology, the stress of the system as regards the operating and environmental conditions, state and degraration with aging and stress, diagnostic tests and classification of test results and making the diagnoses by type of duty and machine. On this basis, the goals were set: to enable monitoring and detection of the state of insulating system using diagnostic methods, to determine the mechanisms and level of degradation, to determine the possible, spent, and remaining life, to detect preventively weak spots and damages before occurrence of failure, to determine the type, level and location of failure and to prevent it and repair.

Keywords: Electrotechnic, electrical machines, electrical rotating machines, transformers, insulating materials, insulating systems, diagnostic, technical diagnostic

Research goals: The results of investigations enable saving and more reliable operation of power equipment through application of diagnostics. Through preventive diagnostics, that enables timely diagnosis of the state of the insulating system or the machine, it is possible to correct the operating conditions, and thus to avoid failures. Prognostics by means of determination of the remaining or spent life enables timely replacement, revitalisation or overhaul of the machine, with the possibility of choosing the most favourable time, place and scope of works after preparation have been done. The diagnostics of weak spots and failures shows the level, kind and location of damage or failure, and often their causes as well if statistic method are used. The results of diagnostic investigations improve the quality and reliability of machines and sometimes of the entire power system, and provide considerable material and time savings because they prevent unexpected drop-outs of power sources and damages to machines.
