Summary: In control systems there is a need of simultaneous translationsand sequential control program analysis. There are severalhierarchic levels of the complex sequential control programanalysis: lexical, syntax and semantical analysis. The design ofa syntax analyzer is presented. It is shown that syntaxcorrectness of an instruction depends on: the structure of theanalized instruction, the structuresof the instructions executedbefore the nanalyzed instruction and the structures of theinstructions executed after the analized instruction. A grammarwhich includes the backward and forward context analysis isdeveloped. This grammar is applied in the analysis of the partprograms of the machine tool control unit.

In addition, events and actionsare time bounded. The most important property of ESMs is theirability to model not only open-loop plant processes, but also theprocesses of the controller as separate modules. The real-timetemporal logic (RTTL) is being used to prove some properties ofthe system modeled with an ESM. As an example of use of the ESM,the model of the Write-Through data replication coherenceprotocol in the distributed environment is given.

Summary: In this paper several methods for reconstruction of 3D images arepresented. Some of these methods use the geometric primitives, and other render the object directly. Methods that visualize data without fitting geometric primitives are named volume rendering methods. They made superior results, but they are time consuming and have great memory requirements. Methods that fit geometric primitives first are the cuberille method and the marching cube method. Julia set is used as data for different volume visualization methods. These methods do not depend on scaling factor, so any sampled data or vector fields of three spatial dimensions can be visualized.

In this paper we develop algorithmthat can dynamically adapt mechanism which ensure consistency indistributed shared memory. In order to dynamically changemechanism according to the application's behaviour the decisionfunction is introduced. For implementing the decision function itis necessary to measure application's parameters during the runtime. The simple computation shows that new algorithm mayoutperform some known algorithms which use single mechanism forimplementing distributed shared memory.

Meeting: 2nd International Symposium on High Performance Distributed Computing
    Held: from 07/20/93 to 07/23/93
Summary: The proposed distributed shared memory model is based on a datareplication scheme that provides an environment for a collectionof processes that interact to solve a parallel programmingproblem. In the implementation of the scheme we suppose that thereplicas of the shared data are present at each node and that anappropriate coherence protocol for maintaining the consistencyamong the replicas is applied. The performance of the distributedcomputation is very sensitive to the data-access behavior of theapplication and to the applied coherence protocol. Communicationcost is regarded as an appropriate performance measure. Therefore, we first introduce a model characterizing the computation behavior with five workload parameters. Second, weformally describe the coherence protocols as cooperating statemachines in order to evaluate their communication costs asfunctions of workload parameters.

Summary: Simulation of complex real-time systems usually requires a lot of processing time. Taking into account the inherent parallelism in real-time system it is possible to speed up simulation usingsmall computers equipped with high-speed networks. The real-time requirements imply that the simulated processes have tosynchronize with simulated real-time clock signals, and parallel execution of simulated events, which speeds up overall simulation, raise synchronization problems among parallel processes. Two basic methods for avoiding synchronization problems are described.

Electro-mechanical convertorsinterfaces both parts by exhibiting some specificcharacteristics. Machine tool simulator should replace themechanical part in a given range of the required functionalcharacteristics. This must be provided in such way that controlsystem will not sense the change of the environment behaviour. Inthis respect, simulator can be used as convenient measuringsystem of the control parameters and as realistic interpreter ofthe machining process. Simulation method and possible designprinciples are presented.

Summary: The NUMAchine multiprocess or project is a large research effort at the University of Toronto aimed to investigate and develop novel software techniques to support efficient parallel computing. An integral part of the project is to design and built the NUMAChine multiprocessor - a large-scale, cache-coherent, non uniform memory access (NUMA), shared memory multiprocessor. The NUMAchine has a umber of hardware innovations designed to facilitate our software techniques. This integrated hardware-software approach is the major theme of the project. In this paper we will present an overview of the NUMAchine project, and will describe the NUMAchine multiprocessor architecture. In particular, we will describe the unique features of the architecture: network caches, cache-coherence protocol, support for the block transfer, monitoring capabilities, and the FPGA-based flexible hardware control. Our software techniques will be address fundamental issues in software support for multiprocessors in the areas of operating systems, compilers, and run-time support. We will describe our research and progress in each area.

Summary: A model for predicting relative performance in distributed shared memory systems is presented. The model is intended for use with systems that feature adaptive consistency schemes. Based on estimated read/write access patterns, the model determines the average steady-state communication costs in the system, which serve as a performance indicator. The model is applied to data items which may be either compact data objects or objects consisting of smaller data elements. It is shown that the best results are attained when protocol selection is done at the level of data elements.

Summary: LOTOS, ISO's standardized language originating from CCS and CSP formalisms, has been designed as an aid in specifying behaviour and especially temporal dependencies of distributed systems. Because of LOTOS' rich semantics considerable problems are met when trying to automate transformations of LOTOS specifications into runnable implementations in some production level language. As a first step to the solution of these problems, a model for the analysis of LOTOS behaviour expressions is proposed in the paper. It is intended to provide an interface to subsequent processing such as simulating a specification, transforming it into a labeled transition system or testing of equality of two specifications with an adopted definition of equivalence. We shall restrict our problem to Basic LOTOS specifying only temporal dependencies while ADT specifications shall not be considered.

Summary: As the application of computer controlled manufacturing devices started to show its advantages in manufacturing procresses all over the world, the problem of their remote monitoring and control emerged. The increasing complexity of production processes and the need for the optimal use of manufacturing equipment demanded that a way of data and command interchange among devices in a production plant be devised. In 1990 ISO proposed a solution to that problem by releasing the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) defining an appropriate Application Service Element that models all necessary entities used to control a manufacturing device through a computer network. An implementation of a remote control for a robot arm based on MMS is described in this paper.

    Author: GLAVINIĆ VLADO

    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 193
Summary: An approach to modeling of the complex text processor, a machinewhich is processing documents w.r.t. their inherent structure, isdescribed in this work. In modeling the hierarchicaldecomposition is used by defining three abstraction levels: aconceptual, a specification, and an implementation one. Theconceptual level includes the intuitive description of theprocessor model - its data structures, and functionality. Thespecification level works out the processor conceptualdescription using rigorous mathematical means, while theimplementation level represents the real implementationcorresponding to a single architecture. The conceptual processor model is defined basing on unique listrepresentations, and on operation classification in analogy tooperations on abstract data types. The conceptual model isvalidated w.r.t. six reference editors known from the literature. A new abstract model is defined by means of algebraicallyspecified abstract data types. The model is an editor machinewith transitions between states being the editor operations. Themachine state is modeled by means of the Cartesian product ofdocument structure and address. A prototype in a functionallanguage is implemented for the model. An original concrete model is formalized by means of dynamicalgebras. The model is developed basing on two-dimensionaldouble-linked structures. The basic operations are implemented byexchanging of pointers to single memory cells storing nodedescriptors. The concrete model is verified w.r.t. the abstractone, and two hardware implementations thereof are proposed.

Summary: The problem of visualization of volumes and isovalue surfacesappears in many scientific fields. An example of data set forvisualization is a sequence of 2D slices. The most common problemis in the visualization of isovalue surfaces, according to thatdata set. For some purposes, the input data is acquired by somesampling methods, and for the others, the data is analyticallygenerated. Some of these acquisition methods like MR and CTscanning and methods that analytically generate fractal sets areconsidered in this paper. Several methods for visualization of volumes and isosurfaces arepresented. Some of these methods use the geometric primitives forrendering, while the others render the object directly upon theinput data. The marching cube method is considered here as an example ofmethods that render the object using geometric primitives. Theresults that are achieved for the marching cube method and forcuberille approach are shown and compared. To present the methodthat renders the object directly upon the input data, an approachto the volume rendering is worked out in details. As the volumerendering methods are very time and space consuming, severalapproaches to achieve the compression in acquired space and timesare also considered. To illustrate each of the considered methods and problems thatmay appear, the examples and results are shown on the fractalsets. Comparing the results, the methods can be reviewed andselected for a particular purpose.

Title: Coherence Protocols Simulation for Distributed Computer Systems

    Author: SRUK VLADO
    Date of defense: 11/14/91
    Language: hrvatski
    Number of pages: 101
Summary: The goal of this work is to provide a tool for analysis the performance of various coherence protocols in distributedcomputer systems. The developed program modules provides a toolfor constructing simulations of a various configurationscoherence protocols in arbitrary configured distributed systems. Since such systems are highly complex there is proposed an methodology for developing simulation models. Parallelism, which characterised such systems, requires a different approach to programming simulation models. Instead of requiring the user to learn this approach it is more practical to incorporate parallel programming techniques into development process. A consistent methodology has been proposed here that is specifically tailored to Ada programming language, and can take full advantage of Ada design features. Presented methodology includes a systematic approach for decomposition into concurrent processes, specification of process interactions, the use of intermediate tasks to affect the degree of task coupling. The essential characteristic of this methodology is integration of tasks of modelling and simulation with design and development. By this simulation can be conducted as an integral part of thedesign and implementation cycle. A number of generated messages per transaction in a systemand a ratio of successfully performed local transaction areproposed as parameters for coherence protocol performanceevaluation. Simulation runs for homogenous workloads indistributed systems are compared to analytical solutions. Thereare also given results of simulation of nonhomogenous workloadsand simulation of system with memory constraints.

Summary: A decomposition of electronic circuits to loosely coupledparts can be used to speed up analysis procedure. From variety of decomposition techniques for circuitequations formulation node-tearing nodal analysis is presented. Aspecific zero-nonzero pattern of dependence matrix is obtained. Prerequisite for node-tearing nodal analysis is decompositionof electronic circuit. Every decomposition has its associated permutation ofdependence matrix. It is known that finding perfect permutationof dependence matrix is NP complete problem. For that reason inthesis are treated heuristic algorithms for decomposition ofelectronic circuits. To speed up the decomposition graph representation amathematical model of electronic circuit is used. Two well known heuristic algorithms for node-tearing oflarge-scale networks are described and required computationaltime is given. New eficient heuristic algorithm for node-tearing ispresented. The concept of choosing nodes with minimum degree incontours construction is utilized in developing new algorithm. The required computational time is shown to be bounded by O(mn+e)where m, n and e are maximal node degree, number of nodes andnumber of edges of input graph, respectively. Experimental results show that proposed algorithm prodicesnear optimal solutions.

Summary: The concept of factory automation comprehends the interconnedtion of single parts of the automated resp. computer managed equipment, aiming to obtain their harmonious interworking that would lead to the increase of flexibility and efficiency of manufacturing, and ultimately of competitivity on the market of the whole entreprise. Therefore the need arises for the design of an appropriate networking as a support to the integration of information interchange within the enterprise. The essential moment in networking is the hierarchical decomposition of the enterprise computer network and its organization as an interconnected network of single layer component networks. The architecture of the manufacturing system internetwork is described in the paper and the basic characteristics of solutions applicable at the single layers of the automated factory are given. As it is customary, the approach to internetwork and component networks definition is based on the concept of open systems.

Summary: In a modern shared memory multiprocessor, it is possible to support more than one protocol for maintaining cache coherence. Possible candidates might be based on the Write-Back/Invalidate, Write-Through/Invalidate, and Write-Update protocols. Hybrid protocols allow the use of different protocols for different data blocks, and dynamic hybrid protocols additionally allow for changes in the choice of protocol during the execution of an application. In this paper, we introduce a set of analytical models for predicting the performance of parallel applications under various cache coherence protocol assumptions. These models can be used at compile time to determine which protocols are to be used for which data blocks, and also to determine when to change protocols in the case of dynamic protocols. Although we focus on tightly-coupled multiprocessor systems, the models apply equally well to loosely-coupled distributed systems such as networks of workstations. Our models are unique in that they lie between a large body of theoretical models that assume independence and a uniform distribution of memory accesses across processors, and a large body of address-trace oriented models that assume the availability of a precise characterization of interleaving behavior of memory accesses. The former are not very realistic, and the latter are not suitable for compile-time and run-time usage. In contrast, our models use a set of parameters that characterize the access behavior of applications well, and can be obtained with advanced compiler technology. We present the models and show how the required parameters can be obtained. We assess the accuracy of our models on 15 parallel applications and show that we can predict performance within a 10% margin. As part of this study, we also show the potential advantage of using dynamic hybrid protocols.

Summary: NUMAchine is a cache-coherent shared-memory multiprocessor designed to have high-performance, be cost effective, modular, and easy to program for efficient parallel execution. Processors, caches, and memory are distributed across a number of stations interconnected by a hierarchy of unidirectional bit-parallel rings. The simplicity of the interconnection permits the use of the wide datapaths at each node, and novel scheme for routing packets between stations enables high-speed operations of the rings in order to reduce latency. The ring hierarchy provides useful features, such as efficient multicasting and order-preserving message transfers, which are exploited by the cache coherence protocol, for low latency invalidation of shared data. The hardware is designed so that cache coherence traffic is restricted to localized sections of the machine whenever possible. NUMAchine is optimized for applications with good locality, and system software is designed to maximize locality. Results from detailed behavioral simulations to evaluate architectural tradeoffs indicate that a prototype implementation will perform well for a variety of parallel applications.
